If you search for London St Pancras-Alfreton on the National Rail or East Midlands Railway website, or any other online journey planner, it obviously mainly comes up with timings via Nottingham, but it sometimes also offers timings via Chesterfield (i.e. St Pancras-Chesterfield via Derby, then change onto a Leeds-Nottingham or Liverpool-Norwich train).
Advance fares are sometimes available via this route, but I wondered if it's also a valid route for walk-on fares such as Anytime or Off Peak Singles or Returns.
I seem to recall that some time ago there was a thread on here about journeys for which Advance fares are available via routes that aren't valid for walk-on fares for the same journey.
St Pancras-Alfreton via Chesterfield might seem like a somewhat circuitous route in that it involves travelling south to north then a little way back down south for the last leg, but you usually get longer between trains at Chesterfield than when you go via Nottingham and Chesterfield is a smaller station so may be more convenient for changing if you have mobility issues.
