I'm looking to travel in Italy but don't want interrail. I see there's a senior Railcard available for €30 that gives discounted travel.

Is it possible to buy this online as a digital download? If so does anyone know how to do this?

All I can see is purchase at station, but clearly I need the pass before I land in Italy so tickets purchased with discount in Trenitalia app are valid.

Thanks!

I believe it is buy at station only. So buy any tickets once you have it.

But if you are buying well before you go to Italy you probably don't want it. As I understand it the discount is 15% off Base so only worth it if booking busy services at the last minute when all the discount tiers (Economy, Super Economy and so on) have gone.

There are also over-60 special fares on FrecciaRosso and FrecciaArgento if you have CartaFreccia but that needs an Italian address. Ditto on InterCity trains if you have Carta X-Go.

No idea if the process is the same but I was able to get a youth one outside of Italy (though there wasn't any charge?).

As least for that hidden away in point 2.3 of the terms and conditions at: https://www.trenitalia.com/it/cartafreccia/condizioni_di_adesioneedutilizzodellecarte.html there is a pdf you need to print out, fill out and scan in order to email it back to them. They say it takes upto 45 days to process though mine took alot longer (well over 2 months).

They (eventually) emailed be back a pdf and added the marker to my account to purchase those tickets. At least it lasts until I age out of it rather then needing to renew every year.

Depending what your plans are in Italy: https://www.trenitalia.com/en/offers/trenitalia-pass.html or https://www.trenitalia.com/en/offers/italia-in-tour.html may be worth considering as alternatives.

....and there are special over-60 fares on open-access high-speed operator Italo, which don't require possession of a railcard.
