I got caught up in the fun on SWT this morning. Having started in Vauxhall where there was little indication of any problems, I arrived in Clapham Junction to find my train was advertised as one minute late (not unusual) until two minutes before departure when the dreaded 'Delayed' appeared. I decided to wait it out - repeated announcements of emergency engineering work at Wimbledon weren't particularly helpful - and eventually patience was rewarded and my train arrived. However, it was getting to the point (another 5 minutes would have just about done it) where I was considering whether the journey was worth it and it would have been better, in terms of what I needed to do, to have given up and returned to London. I've been in the position of a delayed train at the start of a journey making the reason for travel not worth it and had no trouble obtaining a refund, but was wondering what the rules are for partially completed journeys.

Seems to vary according to the TOC, phase of the moon, etc...If you abandon your journey due to delay/cancellation, the erstwhile Condition 26(a) tells us you should get a refund, though that doesn't help you get back to your point of origin!

I would suggest that in such a case, you should be able to ask a suitable member of staff to endorse your ticket regarding the delay (though you are not obliged to) and to give you authority to travel back to where you started (if necessary, such as travelling at a time when your ticket wouldn't otherwise be valid), and then seek a refund.

Depending on the retailer, this may result in the fare for the partial journey being deducted from any refund given, as refunds under Conditions 26(a) and 26(b) require the ticket to be completely unused, so you'd need to claim the refund from the original retailer. As such, you may have better luck making a claim under the relevant TOC's Passenger's Charter...

Thanks for that. The employer was paying and it wasn't a huge fare, paid on the day from an ATM, but my conscience told me that I should try for something if I had turned back. Seems a bit complicated, mind. Which is probably what they want.
