Jubilee, DLR and Elizabeth lines stops at Canary Wharf station - they are separate stations. Should they have their own names?

In Canary Wharf, there are three stations bearing the same name "Canary Wharf" for aforementioned lines - Jubilee line stops to the south, DLR line in the middle and Elizabeth line to the north.

TfL map does show them as separate stations but an average reader will miss the small distinction - the lines don't join up on the map - they're too subtle to be honest. It's also easy to forgot if you don't consult on the map often enough and rely on the names of stations.

Should they have their own names? The reason is that, people will make an assumption that the interchange between these three is easy when in reality it's not. It involves a long walk through crowds during working hours. This can be difficult for people with mobility issues.

Perhaps "Canary Wharf North", "Canary Wharf Central" and "Canary Wharf South" should do the trick?

I made the change from the Elizabeth line station to the Jubilee line station recently having been routed that way by the forum's ticket system. I wouldn't do it again willingly. A much longer walk than i had expected, although there waas a bonus in the form of a clean civilised toilet half way! Next time I would plan to change nearer to central London.

Having said that, I wouldn't be in favour of separate names as that would inhibit the use of the OSI by those unfamiliar with the area.

It's unusual to have two separate stations with the same name, but not unheard of - thinking of Hammersmith and Edgware Road. Perhaps unusual though in that the change between the Jubilee and the DLR is probably quicker via a different station (Heron Quays), and it looks as if walkways are intended to join up eventually to make Crossrail to DLR is quicker via Poplar. Both of those assume the use of a DLR service that calls at the station in question.

If they are to be renamed then I'd suggest suffixes "Elizabeth Line" "DLR" and "Jubilee" instead of north, central and south - in the concrete jungle of Canary Wharf it's quite easy to become disorientated, and many casual travellers probably wouldn't know which station is to the north or south anyway.

I have to agree with your comment, rather than giving a north, Central or South name it would be better to give the name of the line to the station, so that you have Canary Wharf - Elizabeth Line, Canary Wharf - Jubilee Line and Canary Wharf - DLR. That way tourists and people visiting the area know which station relates to which line.

Elizabeth should be North Quay (after the development outside it), DLR should be Canada Square or Cabot Square (the station is in the Canary Wharf shopping centre but this is the best I could come up with) , Jubilee should remain as Canary Wharf (as it's the most used)

Would be quite easy to get sponsors for one of the stations which would at least give it a unique name

- Should Canary Wharf river pier also get renamed? It's closer to Westferry than its namesake. I'd suggest Docklands Pier

Around the time the Crossrail Bill was going through parliament(?), Canary Wharf Station initially was named “Isle Of Dogs”.
Canary Wharf isn't even technically on the Isle of Dogs as it's man made, Crossharbour or the unfortunately named Mudchute* should rather be renamed that

*If the park and farm goes bust (which in this financial climate is likely) they might need to rename it anyway

The area of Mudchute is known as Millwall, the football club was initially established there but took itself and its name elsewhere. The residents apparently wanted a different name for the DLR station. Can't think why.

Didn't the Canary Wharf Estate fund the stations concerned, in which case their opinion on what the stations should be called is perhaps the only one that carries any weight.

And the design appears to be specfically aimed at funnelling as many people through the underground shopping mall as possible.

Arguably when it gets linked up by a footbridge, Poplar should be named the same as the Elizabeth Line canary wharf Station.
That would confuse the issue, considering that there is another DLR station even nearer.

But passengers on the DLR wanting to get to "Canary Wharf" the place should get off at Canary Wharf DLR station, and not West India Quay or Poplar stations.
Yes true but my point is if we're renaming stations, dlr poplar and Elizabeth line CW could have the same name (eg. Poplar junction or CW south) to show that is the fastest way to exchange between the two lines ( which I think it will)

I agree that Poplar will be the shortest interchange, I wonder if it will be promoted though. The whole area is a bit of a mess, both physically and on the map. Especially Jubilee-DLR, where the map shows to change to CW but signs in the station send you to Heron Quays. Not sure what the solution is though, as while they are bad interchanges they are useful ones

Also Poplar has through services to Beckton and Woolwich but Canary Wharf has more services to Bank.

Is this happening then, Poplar being linked to Canary Wharf Crossrail with a footbridge?

It would be good if it was, I got off the DLR at Poplar last year thinking I could walk between there and Canary Wharf, given I could see it from the platform, then quickly realized it would be faster and safer to jump back on the DLR...

Not sure, I think they have to build the block in between first, but they left space for it.

There is a provosion for a footbridge to connect from the mall on top of Canary Wharf crossrail station into public plazas built on the North Quay land which will then connect to the Poplar station birdge too.

Information including links to the planning drawings is here https://group.canarywharf.com/portfolio-and-places/future-projects/north-quay/

Just had a look on Google Maps and it's actually quite clear how it would work, there is already a section of bridge from the top of the Cross Rail mall all ready to go...

It'll be useful when complete.
