Just want to check that I'm okay to do this.

I have a bit of a confusing situation: On 8th Dec I need to travel from Banbury to Birmingham International (to go see a gig at LG arena). Once that's finished I want to get a train to Canley (where my friend lives as I'm staying with him). I then want to return back to Banbury the following day (after 10am) which requires a change at Coventry.

I was thinking I could buy an anytime return from Banbury to Birmingham International, then after the gig pay for an off peak single to Canley, then the next day pay for an off peak single from Canley to Coventry, and then get on a train from Coventry to Banbury and use my Banbury-Birmingham Intl return as the ticket for the Coventry-Banbury leg.

My questions is whether I can get on at Coventry and use my anytime return from Birmingham Intl (if I got on at Birmingham Intl the train would have stopped at Coventry anyway).

I'm pretty sure that would be the cheapest solution if that is allowed.
Thanks.

As long as you are leaving Banbury after 0930, you only need one ticket - an Off Peak return to Birmingham International @ £13.40. This allows you to break your journey at Canley overnight and then go from Canley to Banbury anytime after 0930 the next day

The 12.80 SDR Banbury to Birmingham international is only valid on the date stated on the ticket.

However using the 13.40 SVR would of course be fine as long as you travel after 09:30

There is no off peak day return on this route, so the overnight break of journey clause doesn’t apply in this case.

Sounds even better guys, thanks. I honestly had no idea that you could use one return ticket and break it overnight.

But if you're sure guys then that's great, saved me a few pennies there! (I have a railcard so it's only £8.85 as well!)

This itinerary is perfectly valid if, on your return journey you simply stop off in Canley, before resuming your journey the next day.

There is no double backing providing you simply do:

BAN - BHI (direct via Coventry)
BHI - CNL (direct)
CNL - BAN (direct via Coventry)

As Wintonian said, there isn't an Anytime Return, but providing you are leaving Banbury after 0930 the Off Peak Return is available and if this is after 1000 you only pay £8.85.

I will just point out that the £8.85 is the price using a young person’s rails and the time of 10:00 is due to there being no minimum fare after then.

I couldn’t find where the OP has suggested that they may have such a railcard so though it would be worth mentioning.
