Hi all,

first post, so hope this is correct! I've been looking at moving to kelvedon soon but was shocked by the fare costs going peak which seems to be 33.50 for peak return.

Playing around on trainline.com it seems that buying a return from kelvedon to shenfield (£11.80) , then a return from shenfield to london (£16.20) gets the price down to £28.00. I'm assuming this is because shenfield is classed as a metro service.

Is this method of buying 2 sets of returns for essentially one journey allowed, and is this possible to do on the day from kelvedon ticket office?

Thanks for any advice!

Yup, you can buy a ticket from A to B and then to B to C, and stay on one train as long as it calls at B and C. And you can do it all on the day, you might get an arsey ticket seller who might question it but it is perfectly fine to do.

Be warned that several peak trains from Kelvedon do not stop at Shenfield so you would be restricting your options if you bought two tickets.

Was just about to say the same thing.

Looking at the timetable from Kelvedon to Liverpool Street there are only three trains stopping at Shenfield between 7am and 9am. (7.18/8.04/8.30). The other handful run fast from Chelmsford or Witham.

Good luck commuting on NXEA by the way.

Does anybody ever check tickets onboard packed peak Great Eastern suburban trains into Liverpool Street? Yes your train should officially stop at Shenfield but the barriers will let you through in London.

I really don't think this is the sort of 'advice' we want to be giving on this forum.

Ticket checks Colchester to London commuting on EMUs for a year - one (and that was north of Colchester when I was going to Ipswich)

I'm not sure about the main line, but coming in on the Southend line it varies.

They seem to have periods where they check tickets at Wickford and on the train for a week or so, then nothing for months and months.

They have been busier since the beginning of December so not sure they would get through anyway as you say.

And since nobody else has said it already, don't use trainline to buy tickets as it charges a booking fee which you can avoid by buying the ticket from any train operating company. Or, for that matter, as you're buying returns, you can get them from your departing station assuming it has a ticket office.

As said above, it's totally allowed so long as the train stops at Shenfield. You can buy the tickets at Kelvedon ticket office (from a person, not from a machine).

How often do you need to travel to London? A Season Ticket would be a better choice if it's three or more days a week - it could even be best to use a combination of Season and daily tickets if your journey isn't every day (with this combination you can split at a station without the train needing to stop there).

Maybe not i agree, but working on this line i am only stating facts. It disgusts me that we are so frivolous about revenue protection.
