Since 1990 the Lijn 51 hs run as an underground train from Amsterdam Centraal to Amsterdam Zuid, where after it ran as a tram to Amstelveen. Amstelveen is in reality nothing more than a suburb of Amsterdam but has held onto its separate existence as a council as it considers itself a cut above the rest of the conurbation and has always elected a right wing liberal council. This line was a jointly financed one but the equipment is now old and inadequate for the level of patronage.

If you have Google Translate, you could follow the story quite easily, or you could just google Amstelveen Lijn 51 and that should produce lots of photos and links.
What is to happen is that the line will be altered to a tram between Amstelveen and Amsterdam Zuid where many Lijn 51 travellers now will have to change onto an underground train to Amsterdam Amstel and Amsterdam Centraal. An extra tube service from the northwest side of Amsterdam will run around the city through to Centraal alongside the ring road A10 for some distance, using an existing line through Amsterdam Zuid.
So it is a tram-train failure that essentially due to its success and I think will prove better, albeit with the need to change at Zuid, as pax will more likely get a seat. Also for some pax who used to transfer to Tram 5, they won't have to do that any longer, because that is now the tram that will run through to Amstelveen, AIUI.
Just as a piece of local knowledge, the reason for the different spelling for Amsterdam and Amstelveen, is that both names incorporate the river Amstel in them which flows through both. The capital city bastardised the 'l' into an 'r'. It should really be 'Amsteldam'!
