I’m off to Liverpool in a couple of weeks and will be there from approx 11am day one to 3pm on day two. Whilst I’m driving most of the way, I don’t really want to drive in the city and parking is daylight robbery in the city centre.

As I understand it Merseytravel operate park and ride at a number of their stations, but there’s a ban on overnight parking.

Is this correct?

If so, what other options are there?

Depending on where you're coming from Hooton on the Wirral line has a large car park attached that is run by Cheshire West Council rather than Merseytravel, charges around £1.50 per day and overnight parking is allowed.

Hooton is a 5min drive from junction 5 of the M53 and has 6 trains an hour (4 an hour evenings/ sundays) to Liverpool.

Plenty of on street options near suburban Merseyrail stations in nicer areas, e.g. Aughton Park where people park on the bridge which is completely unrestricted. Just choose carefully so you don't cause local parking wars.

It is indeed correct (and beyond stupid) that you can't park overnight in a Merseyrail car park. And they do check.

At the risk of promoting driving, Your Parking Space has some (in my opinion) good value spaces in the city centre (<£10/day). Although that does not eliminate the driving in the city bit.

So far as cities go I really don't find driving in Liverpool that bad. It's busy, but roads are generally wide and traffic not that terrible.
