Hi,
Just wanted to get confirmation on something, I already asked LNER if it's okay to buy an e-ticket and send it to a friend to use which it is but they haven't got back to me on my second question and this definitely the right place for any advice!

Does my friend need the LNER e-ticket email or can I just screenshot the barcode of the ticket and send using messenger?

They can view pictures on messenger but don't have an app to open .pdf files.

Just wanted to make sure

Thank you :)

It would certainly be helpful for the whole ticket to be visible rather than only the code, but it shouldn't be necessary.

If you go into the "my account" section on the LNER site you can email the tickets to whoever you want to. This can be in PDF, Apple or Google Walett formats

What type of device do they have?

Can they install a PDF reader app?

What messenger app are they using? Many can deal with pdfs themselves.

If they have a smartphone, i'd be shocked if they cant open a pdf, and if they don't have a smartphone, then im not sure that the e ticket would be fine to use

Turns out he has a one plus phone and could open up the e-ticket but after the experience with them, he won't travel using one ever again as although he had no problem (with the exception of the fatality at Oxenholme on Monday affecting the outbound journey and the initial wrong information from Avanti on ticket acceptance) using the e-ticket the return journey from Euston wasn't painfree.

The e-ticket refused to scan at the barriers and the gateline staff said as it wouldn't scan he doesn't know if it's valid or been used and can't permit travel. He had to buy a paper ticket at £77.70.

His words were" if they make it compulsory to use these e-ticket things then I won't bother travelling"

This coupled with the fact that a 9 car pendo was used instead of an 11 car one and they wouldn't honour seat reservations, he had to stand most of the way to Preston.

This sounds very odd. Did he show the actual e-ticket? Was this shown on the device or a paper copy? If you can send me a conversation message with a copy of the ticket attached, I can ask someone to look into this for you.

It could be yet another case of Avanti staff making up rules; they have been known to deny legitimate travel to passengers holding valid tickets, but this happens with both paper tickets and e-tickets. Holding a valid paper ticket does not guarantee the Avanti staff at Euston will behave correctly and allow travel.

This is very odd as the vast majority of journeys up North are on e-tickets; I've been on trains where I was the only person in my coach showing a paper ticket (such as a journey to Selby on a Northern Duo ticket, when an e-ticket wasn't available; I'm told they are now enabled for that journey). Passengers overwhelmingly choose e-tickets where there is a choice; this has been debated in other threads, most recently:
