Evening folks

I just submitted an application for TM at Kings Cross with LNER

Anyone around to give us the scoop on what to expect at the assessment??

I had a trainee drivers assessment about 10 years ago so I am familiar with the SCAAT tests and GB.

Thanks a million

Most likely to start with you'll be placed in a group and expected to work as a team to solve problems or come up with outcomes. There are a few different ways they do this, including the "shopping list" method.

Then there should be the interviews, not sure on TMs but it's usually a speed interview, where you get put in a group of 4 candidates with 4 staff. You then have 2 minutes per interviewer to answer questions related to the role, such as how would you handle X, when have you dealt with Y etc.

Use the job description to work out examples of things you've done in the past which would help you as a TM. Remember the STAR technique as they want as much detail as possible in 2 minutes.

Omnicity, thats a massive help, thank you very much for that.

Just out of curiosity, would you happen to be a TM at LNER??

You're welcome. I'm not, but I had an assessment for a station role earlier this week, it's more or less the same until you pass the interviews.

Brilliant, how did you get on???
It was my first ever job interview and assessment, so understandably didn't score as well as the other candidates, but it'll help me in the future at least!

The recruitment team are lovely, so even if you're not successful they'll be willing to provide constructive feedback.

Thats really good to know. I have got an application in with TPE, I dont know if its a railway thing but when I have dealt with First before, it has been a lengthy process from application to assessment. I also had a similar experience with Southern Rail around the same time. This is what made me think that the recruitment process takes a little time. Its encouraging to know that the offer of feedback is there. Thats a great approach to have as well, its experience and thats going to help.

I think that's the norm for most operators, LNER were prompt with me - took just under a month from sending off my application to getting to the assessment centre and then the results and feedback.

Glad your recruitment experience was well for you, I on the other hand found them challenging regarding responding to my emails. I had applied a role back in October at kings cross which I attended the assessment day the same month, prior to that i’m still in the limbo as I find them not reply back to my emails regarding the outcome.

May I ask what station you had applied to.

Thank you

Good luck with the application.

I applied for a Train Managers post with Virgin earlier this year and when I was invited for my assessment day - there were ten of us there for one job!!! There may be internal candidates but don't be put off by this as sometimes the assessors are looking for new blood that will benefit the TOC. Sadly, even though I performed really well - one of the other candidates was offered the job.

You've got just as much a chance as anyone else. What I will say is try and research the role first as LNER will no doubt give you a scenario that a Train Manager will deal with and you've got to give them answers in which you've explored certain options and then decided on a course of action.
