Going to both Munich and Stuttgart soon - are there any loco hauled trains that I can travel on with my €49 Deutschlandticket that either start there or are easily reachable from there? Or are there any interesting odd little branch lines worth doing? Thank you

As you certainly know this ticket/season is only valid on R/RE-Zuege. There are no through R/RE-trains between the 2, always change Ulm, Landes/provincial border, and perhaps also Augsburg. In both cities are various R/E trains loco hauled, mostly with double-deck coaches, but right now I have forgotten if these also serve these direct lines-they did from S via Ulm-loco change!-till last year going to the Bodensee/Friedrichshafen, but this later part is now also electrified.
A novelty for this year, but no loco, is the hi-speed line S-ULm, now partly open, from Wendlingen and also with a RE-hourly service, but sets.
In B-W=Land Baden Wúrttemberg, around Stuttgart, are several partly weekend/summer only small branchlines with special old stock also open for these ticketholders. S-main station is a big building site. Take extra time to find your way around it.
Just by chance right no sitting in dismal (sorry to say) MAN airport, awaiting an EZ-flite to M(ünchen), to continue my current InterRail.

Munich is reasonably good for locos - out to Mühldorf, including some 218 workings when I last checked, plus the ALX services south to Oberstdorf and north to Regensburg (electrified).

Stuttgart-Ulm-Friedrichshafen is double deck stock with TRAXX Class 146 locomotives.

The Wendlingen-Ulm IRE200 service is operated by loco hauled stock top’n’tailed by two Vectron locos leased from ELL. Both locos power.

Sadly the Alex-Sud loco hauled trains no longer run. I am pretty sure they have been replaced by units (operated by another company).

The Alex-Nord service to Phraha/Hof is still going for now, and is quite an unusual operation. It's not often that you get to travel on a train that includes a very modern double deck coach and somewhat more elderly non air-con compartment coaches. And locomotive changes are becoming somewhat rare too. It starts out behind an electric loco to Regensburg, then diesel onwards (with the Praha portion swapping to a CD electric loco further on).

On a similar note, would an Interrail pass be valid on the SVG Stuttgart-Singen via Friedrichshafen service? It's not specifically listed on the Interrail list of German operators, but equally it seems to be treated as a normal regional service for ticketing purposes.

I hve been told that Interrail is valid in general on German regional services and there is no need to consult lists.
