Hi, hope somebody can help. I work for a company that sells model railway items, and we want to start producing some own brand collectibles, i can't disclose what these will be however i do know that we will need flat side panels, that can be laser cut, from locomotives and coaches from DMU/EMUs, i know there's a decent amount of stuff being scrapped at the moment and we have tried to directly contacting the scrapyards but haven't had much luck as of yet. if anyone has any contacts that might be able to help us that would be amazing to know!
thanks!

Ive seen a similar question asked in Facebook groups. I gather scrap yards are required to totally destroy some of the stuff going for disposal at the moment. No flame-cut numbers or moquettes sneaking out the back door.
Only those with TDO (Total Destruction Orders) going to certain scrapyards though. Booths Rotherham would probably be your best best - nearly everything that heads to SIMS (be it Newport or Beeston) ends up going into the crushers.

What on earth would be the problem in letting someone have a small keepsake from a train?

The day job of processing the scrap does not easily allow for small bits to be taken off the trains - ie it adds costs to the processing.

I have seen a couple of people on Ebay with the odd bit. I know Arlington Fleet Services have sold the odd bit there. Booths sometimes sells the odd bit (depends on destruction orders). SIMS no chance. Ron Hull JR recently sold some Class57s as discussed on the DRS hertiage fleet.

My best advice would be to perhaps go to a preserved railway as some times they may have off cuts or panels they have had to replace etc.

I think because a lot of stock being sent for scrap isn't actually totally dead (and some is far from it, such as the 365s), the ROSCOs are concerned about units being sold on to others who will undercut them - or possibly about being held liable if they are reused and there is some safety issue - so they avoid this prospect with total destruction orders. (Just a theory though).

That was certainly the case when it came to disposing of the 332s and the 373s. Both operators wanted to avoid any possibility of those trains ending up in the hands of anyone that could use those trains on a new competing service.
