Hi everyone,

I've searched the forums and also manually looked back a fair few pages, but couldn't seem to find any other threads.

I had just wondered if anyone knows where I'd be able to obtain/download/listen to the London Underground announcement files?
The standard ones about minding the gap, letting customers off the train first, etc. The actual station announcements would be helpful too, but not necessary. Possibly just a segment of a line?

I know there are videos and things on YouTube but this is for a university project and they are bad quality / background noise etc.

I'm sure I've seen them around somewhere before!

EDIT: I know there are some on emmaclarke.com, but I need more! Also the full 'please mind the gap between the train and the platform' would be benificial.

Thanks

A freedom of information act releases the original (not current) 96TS announcement files, which should have what you need. However IIRC they are the only files in a format which makes them able to be burned to a CD by the CSC.

Hi Daniel, thanks very much for your response.
I didn't know they'd have to release them to due a freedom of information act! I suppose that hints at the fact that the current ones will be available in the future?

In any case, do you know where I'd go about finding the 96TS announcement files then?

Hi sebbyriot,

I only base that information on the fact that I've requested them myself and have been told that's all that's available. The sound files were supplied on an Audio CD but I don't know where it is. My best suggestion is to submit your own Freedom of Information Act to London Underground's Customer Services Centre. It doesn't cost you anything and takes a couple of weeks.

I think some of the 'ad hoc' ones are better to record for posterity.
At Baker Street on an EB H & C train - " Woof, Woof , Woof - This is a Barking train "

Do you have any idea of how the other sound files are stored?

One of my favourites is the Waterloo and City line driver who invited his passengers to 'relax and enjoy the short ride' to Bank.

Anyone remember the original refurbished 1973 stock semi-auto announcer which was unusually a man? I say semi automatic because the driver had to punch in a code to make them work. The most common were:

'Stand clear of the doors please'
'Please mind the gap between the train and the platform'
'Let passengers off the train first please'
'Please move right down inside the car'

Not many drivers used them, but I believe they were actually voiced by an LU driver.

You should apply for permission to join the Automated Annoucements section of the forum. This is a Private forum with access only granted to members, but it is frequently updated with new recordings and voiceovers.

In particular, there is a thread containing a whole history of announcements on the Underground, and I am sure this would be very enriching to your project.

To join the group:

1) Go to your User Control Panel
2) On the left hand side on the screen you will see a section of boxes. One box is titled 'Networking' and below this is a link that reads 'Group Memberships.'
3) Apply for permission to join Automated Announcements. You will need to give a reason stating why you want to join, but I am sure you will be accepted if you need the info for school reasons.

Hope this helped. :)

Thanks for this, I know your message was aimed at the original poster but I never knew this private forum existed either.

No problem, I'm glad I could be of assistance. :)

There are other groups to, such as 'Cycling Disused Lines', but I only use the AA one.
