I was sitting near the site of the old Long Eaton station this afternoon, and my wife and I were speculating about the re-opening of the site.

Bearing in mind that Sawley Station was renamed Long Eaton, when Long Eaton was closed, what would a new station on the Erewash valley lines be called? Real replies, flippant replies and educated guesses are most welcome!

Hopefully, ILKESTON. :D

But if a more sensibly located Long Eaton station were to be considered, how about a nice original name such as Long Eaton Town? :)

The new station would I hope be on the same line as Ilkeston, and also Stapleford & Sandiacre. Ilkeston (I currently live there) should have had a station reinsated years ago, imho.

My discussions earlier thought maybe Long Eaton Central, Long Eaton Parkway, Long Eaton Town, or maybe Long Eaton, renaming the current Long Eaton as Sawley. Now that last one would cause confusion!!

Particularly as the present Long Eaton station isnt actually in Long Eaton proper.

But what trains could use it?

On reaching Trent, the only possibilities are Leicester or Derby.

I doubt a service which ran direct down the Erewash from Chesterfield to Leicester would attract much custom. Likewise, I can't imagine any Chesterfield to Derby service being run that way (diversions excepted) The extra milege, time and hassle would make it a non starter, unfortunately.

What would the time penalty be if a Derby - Nottingham ran to Long Eaton Town and reversed there?

Well, it is planned to put stations at Long Eaton , near Tesco, Stapleford & Sandiacre (where the station was, on the bridge at Toton Depot entrance) and Ilkeston.

Railways
4.12 Within the Borough, there is only one passenger rail station, at Long Eaton, but there are several former stations which may provide opportunities for reopening passenger services. In particular, the reopening of a station to serve Ilkeston would be beneficial to the town and Borrowash station could be reopened as a commuter route to Derby and as a link into the wider railway network. However, the former stations at Trowell and Sandiacre are situated outside the administrative boundary of the Borough Council. Although the increased use of railways is supported, in the interests of the rail user and the environment, within the context of preparing a Local Plan only a general policy can be put forward. However, at Long Eaton, in the interest of keeping options open, a disused railway line off Meadow Lane is afforded protection as it may be needed in connection with any reopening of a central Long Eaton station (see Proposal Map).

Sounds like more of a council aspiration than anything planned by Network Rail.

It seems that a lot of posters on the HS2 threads think Toton sidings are the likely location for the East Midlands high speed station. (East Midlands International anyone?). Toton sidings are within a 10 min walk of Long Eaton town centre.

But whilst Toton yard has reasonable access to most branches of the midlands mainline by virtue of Trent Junction nearby. no passengers services pass through except on diversions. I would expect at least some of the local Derby-Nottingham services to be routed via Toton for local dispersal of HS2 passengers.
