I hope I am in the right place as I am a new member, and not particularly good at this sort of thing,Simply put ..I have lost my return ticket and senior railcard. I journeyed to Warminster from York on the 9.45 on a doubled up train as my booked train due to depart at 10.34 was cancelled due to flooding et al, just checking my things for my return on Saturday 1Dec found my ticket and card to be missing,my Daughter bought my ticket for me online, I can get a receipt printed for the transaction, but would it be enough? Or should I bite the bullet and buy a single and put it down to being an old fart for loseing it ?Any advice from you more experienced travellers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation ....... If I have broken any etiquette I am sorry,

I'm afraid you're on a hiding to nothing here, you'll have to buy a new ticket. The receipt won't work, otherwise two people could buy a ticket and one travel on the ticket and the other on the receipt.

I think you can get the railcard replaced for a fiver if you have the receipt for it, but act fast as the price will double soon.

I am sorry to hear of your lost ticket and card.

Assuming that your railcard was bought at a station or other face to face outlet, the receipt needed for a railcard replacement is the 'Senior Railcard Receipt', the portion of the leaflet/form retained by you at the time of purchase. You will not be able to get a replacement without it. The £5 admin fee will go up to £10 on 2nd January.

If you cannot get a new railcard before your next journey please remember that you must buy a non-discounted ticket.

I don't think ther eis much chance of the railcard being handed in at Warminster unless it was actually lost there. If handed in on the train, it is more likely to have been taken to wherever the conductor finished their shift. Your best bet might be to contact FGW (or whichever TOC ran the service you used).

On the other hand, if you have the receipt, it may not be worth the time and trouble of trying to locate the railcard at all.

Bear in mind that there might well be tickets cheaper than the through single fare.

Without checking I'd guess at a half-price single booked on East Coast's website between London and York, with another single Warninster-London (possibly split to take advantage of FGW's sensible pricing of singles). Or if you'd prefer to avoid London then a series of shorter distance singles is certain to be cheaper than the through ticket on Crosscountry. You'd still be travelling on the same train's no need to make extra changes.

It is possible to buy tickets totalling £60.90 on the day of travel, if this long itinerary is acceptable:

Edit: Sorry, wrong direction provided

York d 1105 (calls Sherburn-in-Elmet & Swinton)
Sheffield a 1236

Sheffield d 1254 (calls Derby)

Birmingham New St a 1407

Birmingham New St d 1449

Worcester Foregate St a 1530

Worcester Foregate St d 1704

Bristol Temple Meads a 1839

Bristol Temple Meads d 1922 (calls Keynsham)

Warminster a 2010

This is achieved by purchasing the following Day Single tickets:

York to Sherburn in Elmet £4.50

Sherburn in Elmet - Swinton (S Yorks) £8.50
Swinton (S Yorks) to Derby £10.20
Derby to Worcester Stns £15.90
Worcester Stns to Keynsham £11.70
Keynsham to Warminster £10.10
Total £60.90

A through ticket costs around £40 more (avoiding London) but you can take any permitted route without having to take long detours.

If you wish to go via London, you are best buying a ticket to London and another ticket from there. As eastdyke says, buy from the East Coast website tomorrow and you can get a ticket for the East Coast portion of your journey for less than £47.

All above fares can be reduced by around 1/3 if you can purchase a new Railcard or you can obtain a replacement.

Hi Yorkie,

I think that the OP is actually in Warminster and needs to return to York on Saturday.

Hope that even less expensive fares might be available that way round?

Sorry, yes, when I see two place names, I automatically think origin to destination.

Nearly all fares are the same in reverse. There are some exceptions (London commuter flows, some airport flows) but they shouldn't apply here. I have checked and the fares are the same. However heading to York, I'd finish with a simple Sheffield - York ticket due to the infrequent service on the route via Sherburn in Elmet.

Warminster to Keynsham £10.10
Keynsham to Worcester Stns £11.70
Worcester Stns to Derby £15.90
Derby to Sheffield £10.20
Sheffield to York £17.00

This isn't the cheapest, the cheapest involves rail replacement buses and many stopping trains.

www.brfares.com is a good site to look up individual fares.

For the "splits" I used www.trainscanbecheaper.info
