I am going to Athus in Belgium from Luxembourg. I will have a regular €4 day ticket from Luxembourg main station, which I can definitely use up to the last station Rodange. I went on the CFL website to see if I could buy an extension ticket, but the booking engine (which is B-europe) says Athus is in Luxembourg. Does this mean the €4 ticket is valid?

It also says Volmerange-les-Mines and Audun-le-Tiche are in Luxembourg, even though they are in France - but this makes sense because they are "dead ends" of the network from which it is only possible to travel into Luxembourg. Furthermore I have taken the train to those stations and confirmed the €4 ticket was valid.

Athus is served by SNCB trains to Arlon and Libramont so the situation is different. Yes I can just ask when I get there but maybe someone here knows something?

Yes i can confirm that the 2.00EUR Single and 4.00EUR Day tickets are indeed valid to and from Athus in Belgium. CFL consider this as one of their stations for ticketing purposes.

These are the only three stations outside of Luxembourg where the 2.00EUR Single and 4.00EUR Day tickets are valid to and from:

• Athus (Belgium)
• Audun Le Tiche (France)
• Volmerange Les Mines (France)

For all other stations outside of Luxembourg you will need a different ticket.

So yes you can indeed you this ticket to and from Athus in Belgium.

Hope this helps.

That's great, thanks. Why can't they just write this clearly on their website (or make it easy to find, if I am being n00b)... those two stations in France don't even show on their map

No unfortunately the CFL website makes no mention of the validity of their tickets to these three stations. The only place on their website where it seems to be mentioned is in their conditions of carriage pdf document which is over 100 pages long and only available in the French and German languages.

I agree that they really need to make it more clear on their website that their tickets can be used to these three stations.

It's also worth noting that you can walk from Rodange (Luxembourg) to Athus (Belgium) in about 15 minutes. This may be useful to keep in mind as Rodange has a much more frequent service of 4tph to/from Luxembourg compared to Athus which has just 1tph to/from Luxembourg.

Places without additional tickets purchased are Venlo from Germany and Gronau from Enschede, the Netherlands. Distance is so small that i take the risk.

As for the LUX tickets: they are also valid on quite a lot of LUX-run BUSlines into BE/FR and DE, up to nearly 20 kms away from border, like f.e. Bastogne in BE, Longwy in FR. Higher prices (5€/single or 9€daypass) apply to other even longer buslines into FR and DE-like to Trier, Prüm or Thionville. As long as this lasts-likely from 1/1/20 these would be free, at least for the short ones.
Its FRance that has re-instigated many random border checks since the major terrorist-attacks a year or 2 ago, at any of its borders. Oh-and there is also a fine difference between passport control (immigration) and that of the goods you carry (customs), even nowadays many people erroneously believe ''customs'' are those who do the safety cehcks at airports.
