A few weeks ago I booked two single tickets for the TPE journey, Liverpool Lime Street to Carlisle.

When I printed the tickets out I notice they say LVP - CAR, which I understand to mean Liverpool Stations (ie overground stations)

My wife and I are staying close to Liverpool Central, so am I correct in assuming we could take the underground train first, from LVC to Lime Street ?

Yes, I know it's not very far to walk, so if that is what we have to do, no problem.

Last year though, on our first trip to Liverpool, we were arriving from Manchester and I actually paid a little bit extra for the train to Lime Street, plus the underground to Liverpool Central.

Walk, because the way the loop works it’s the wrong way for you, you have to change at either James Street or Moorfields and you’ll walk further inside stations than just walking directly, it’s not far.

It’s 500m or a third of a mile at most.
Going to Central might make slightly more sense, it’s one stop from Lime Street. If it’s raining, for example.

You've not mentioned the routeing on the ticket, so it's not posssible to give a definitive answer regarding validity.

However as stated above it would be a very convoluted journey, compared to walking directly to LIV.

@Willie Bee. What ticket type have you booked exactly? If they are Anytime Day Singles (route "TPE Only") or Advance Singles (route "AP TPE Only") can't see that they would be valid on a connecting Merseyrail train service.

OP here .. thanks for the replies.

We can just walk from our hotel .. we did it before without problems.

I didn't know there wasn't a one-stop train from LVC to LIV

Now you do!
The loop goes clockwise.
Single track.
Er, no. You don't.

<EDIT> Ahem. Was is not the same as Wasn't. Please ignore. </EDIT>

There's a one-stop direct train from Lime Street to Central. But from Central to Lime Street you have to go Central - Moorfields (one stop, Northern Line) and change line to got Moorfields - Lime Street (one stop, Wirral Line).

In other words, if you're near Central and want to go to Lime Street, then walk.

(True story - I have, some years ago, seen a taxi flagged down in the top part of Eliot Street. It was clear from the customer's body language that they wanted to go to Lime Street station - and clear from the cabbie's that they were reluctant to take a fare for rather less than 200 yards. I'm fairly sure that the passenger made it clear that they were thoroughly lost and they didn't care about common snese - they just wanted to be delivered to their train)

@Willie Bee. Could you clarify? All a bit academic if your tickets aren't actually valid for travel on Merseyrail.

Out of interest, which booking site did you use? These codes shouldn't appear on the printed ticket.

I think the OP is referring to having printed e-ticket PDFs that they were sent. On an e-ticket you would indeed see LVP and CAR.

Both tickets are .. advanced single, booked directly with TPE
In general, with Advance Single tickets, you must travel on the exact itinerary specified on the ticket or in the booking. There are some exceptions but I don't think these would allow you to travel from Liverpool Central to Lime Street via James Street or Moorfields.
