I have a friend who has a new house and a new job so is working out his options for a season ticket.

He currently lives in Golders Green and works at Bank therefore owns a 1-3 travel card.

His new home is in Manor Park (zone 3/4) and new main office is at Loughton (zone 6).

He will travel Manor Park to Loughton via Stratford (zone 2/3).

So it would seem a new annual travel card zones 3-6 would be in order.

However he may still have to travel in to Bank on occasion.

I suggested that he would have to if travelling in from Manor Park or Debden get off at Stratford to tap in and continue on to Bank via PAYG. This would also be necessary on the way back.

This would be a real pain as you would have to wait for the next service and probably walk quite far to find a validation to tap in.

Bar buying a Zone 1-6 does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you.

If extending by PAYG in conjunction with a travelcard you don't have to get off and touch in at the changeover point, the system works it out for you when you touch out at the eventual station that is outside (i.e. not included in) your travelcard zones.

Same on the return leg, assuming you touch out correctly somewhere within your travelcard zones

A Z36 is correct for Manor Park to Loughton on a regular basis. On the assumption he has an Oyster Card then all he needs to do is ensure he has a positive cash balance on the card alongside the Travelcard. There is NO need to get off and get back on again. He simply touches in at Manor Park and out at Bank (or wherever) and he will be charged an extension from the Z3 boundary to whatever station he has travelled to. Even if he continued to Liverpool St and went out the main line gateline and in at the tube and then exited at Bank he would still only be charged one fare as the gates are programmed to recognise the interchange at Liv St (provided he doesn't take forever changing between the two parts of the station).

TfL publish the valid interchanges and interchange times.

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/out-of-station-interchanges

Our Oyster and contactless payment systems allow customers to interchange between stations, or parts of the same station in some cases, without being charged for two separate journeys. This is called an Out-of-Station-Interchange (OSI).

Just to note that if the cash balance on the card ever falls below zero (goes into a negative balance) then he will NOT be allowed to travel even with a valid Travelcard on the card. The rules are that the cash balance must be zero or a positive value to permit travel. Your friend can check the balance and journey history by touching his Oyster Card on a ticket machine reader and following the on screen instructions. Alternatively if the Oyster Card is registered and he has a TfL account then he can track his travel and any charges on line.

Hope that helps.

If you don't mind using a bus, using the W19 to Leytonstone and picking up Central Line from there means you only need a Z4-6 Travelcard. It is timetabled to be less than 5 minutes slower than via Stratford, but will be much quieter.

Just wanted to say thanks to all, great advice.

Just for the record he is interested in the bus route mentioned and I have advised auto top up to avoid the large TfL PF's and possible prosecution
