Hi,

This is quite a sensitive post but I need to ask the questions!

I'm considering a career move from what I do at the moment to applying for a trainee train driver job should something suitable come up. I know people in the industry and have asked about the application process, but been reluctant to discuss the elephant in the room - my medical history. I know that for pilots the rules are SO tight and I wouldn't get a job because of my current medication and history.

Without going into too much detail, this is a brief overview of my history and current prescriptions. Can people shed some light on whether any of these would be an automatic 'no' for a driver position?
  • History of suicide attempts, self harm and mental health problems, including one voluntary hospital admission in 2018. Diagnosed with PTSD, EUPD and depression/anxiety, BUT recovered and under GP care, no longer needing specialist mental health support and continue to work full time/look after myself/etc.
  • Currently prescribed x2 types of antidepressants but neither make me drowsy or have known drowsy side effects.
  • Very much in a recovered position with a positive outlook on life and I manage my mental health proactively and safely. Have not been under specialist care for a year now (general GP support as needed rather than under MH team).
Sorry, it's a bit morbid, but I need to know!
Thanks

There are plenty of train crew who are on antidepressants or have been on them both during the application process and since. You are required to disclose medication and a railway Doctor will want to know why you were prescribed it. How much you reveal is up to you. Only you know how stable you are. It is highly pressured training and working on the railway so you need to consider whether or not this is the right career path. Use the search function to find other discussions about antidepressants.

I’d suggest that no one on here will be able to answer your question. Each medical case is judged on its merits so the only way you’ll find out for sure is to apply and see how it goes.
