As title. Going to be visiting Manchester next month and a £10 Metrolink pass is somewhat more appealing than a £31 week ticket.

As an aside, it's almost certain (after an attempt a couple of years back) that a normal Metrolink ticket won't load on anything other than their own smartcards (hurray for standardisation ).

If you are referring to the £10.60 7 day pass be aware this only covers Zone 1 (or another, individual zone) and isn't actually that much use for getting around, unless all of your travel will be within a mile or so of the city centre, which is walkable anyway.

No, I'm referring to the 1-year train and tram add-on for holders of an ENCTS pass (but the Metrolink website mentions TfGM-issued passes).

The website seems to mention the following:
To get a travel pass for older people from TfGM you must:
  • live in Greater Manchester, (if you live outside Greater Manchester, apply for a pass in your own area but you cannot add tram and train travel within Greater Manchester to passes issued by other areas); and
I’m unfamiliar as to whether your suggestion would work, but the TfGM site seems to explicitly indicate it won’t.

This isn’t the case everywhere - Nexus (Tyne & Wear) run a similar scheme where ENCTP (English National Concessionary Travel Pass) holders can add metro and some train travel for £24/year if your pass is issued outside Tyne & Wear. (It’s £12 if your pass is issued in Tyne & Wear.)

This is only if you have a Manchester issued pass. Somewhat unbelievably there has even been a fair amount of whinging about having to pay £10 train and tram since it used to be free. Ungrateful lot :s.
