Does anybody have the mileage from New Street to Derby via Lichfield City? Railmiles doesn't think this exists, it keeps wanting to send me back on myself via washwood heath.

The service was 1E68 1147 Southampton Cen-York.

Ta folks.

Quail has it as 39mi 36ch for New St-Derby via Lichfield (as opposed to 41mi 32ch via Tamworth) - it has six changes of mileage, though, so I hope I haven't made a mistake adding up!

Are you sure that's the right headcode? I get 1E68 as being the 1747, with the 1147 being 1E44.

Anyway, from the Sectional Appendices, I get it as being 40 miles 23 chains via Lichfield, compared with 41 miles 18 chains via Tamworth.

Right, I've just tried it with the sectional appendices and got 39mi 34ch... Let's spell it out and see if anyone can spot where I've gone wrong (writing 3.45 for 3mi 45ch)

New St - Curzon St Jn on MD301: 112.73 to 112.07 = 0.66.
Curzon St Jn - Aston North Jn on MD320: (zero to) 1.73.
Aston North Jn - Lichfield City Jn on MD340: (zero to) 13.33.
Lichfield City Jn - Wichnor Jn on MD340 / LN3340: 16.47 to 23.33 = 6.66.
Wichnor Jn - London Rd Jn on LN3501: 16.22 (to zero).
London Rd Jn to Derby on LN3201: 127.54 to 127.68 = 0.14.

0.66 + 1.73 + 13.33 + 6.66 + 16.22 + 0.14 = 39.34, by my reckoning. How did you get 40.23?

(Quail had 112.05 for Curzon St rather than 112.07, which accounts for the 2ch difference. Although come to think of it I was looking at the old 1990 edition and Curzon St Jn moved in 2000... D'oh...)

Using Railmiles I get Bhm-Lichfield Trent Valley (high level) as 17m 55ch and Lichfield Trent Valley (high level)-Derby as 21m 64ch totalling to 39 M 39 ch.

Thanks very much. I did get the wrong Headcode, it was actually the 1747 SO. I misread it... the dizzy heights over a winning tractor must of affected my vision! :o

Thanks for the help gents, very much Appreciated. Currently trawling my P5 track atlas to see if I get a similar figure and if not I'm gonna go with q figure posted on here!

Thanks once again.

*snip*

0.66 + 1.73 + 13.33 + 6.66 + 16.22 + 0.14 = 39.34, by my reckoning. How did you get 40.23?

Might have got it wrong when copying the figures across, or possibly when converting from miles and chains to "decimal" miles. Here's my working out:

Common to both routes:

Birmingham New Street (112mi 73ch) - Proof House Junction (112mi 19ch) = 54ch (0.675mi) (MD301)
London Road Junction (127mi 54ch) - Derby Station (127mi 68ch) = 14ch (0.175mi) (LN3201)

via Lichfield City:

Proof House Junction (112mi 19ch) - Curzon Street Junction (112mi 7ch) = 12ch (0.15mi) (MD320)
Curzon Street Junction (0mi) - Aston South Junction (2mi 61ch) = 2mi 61ch (2.7625mi) (MD320)
Aston South Junction (1mi 60ch) - Aston North Junction (1mi 73ch) = 13ch (0.1625mi) (MD320)
Aston North Junction (0mi) - Lichfield City Junction (13mi 33ch) = 13mi 33ch (13.4125mi) (MD340)
Lichfield City Junction (16mi 47ch) - Zone Boundary (19mi) = 2mi 33ch (2.4125mi) (MD340)
Zone Boundary (19mi) - Wichnor Junction (23mi 33ch) = 4mi 33ch (4.4125mi) (LN3340)
Wichnor Junction (16mi 22ch) - London Road Junction (0mi) = 16mi 22ch (16.275mi) (LN3501)

via Tamworth:

Proof House Junction (41mi 51ch) - Water Orton East Junction (34mi 43ch) = 7mi 8ch (7.1mi) (MD501)
Water Orton East Junction (33mi 22ch) - Zone Boundary (23mi 30ch) = 9mi 72ch (9.9mi) (MD501)
Zone Boundary (23mi 30ch) - London Road Junction (0mi) = 23mi 30ch (23.375mi) (LN3501)

Adding those together:

Via Lichfield: 0.675 + 0.15 + 2.7625 + 0.1625 + 13.4125 + 2.4125 + 4.4125 + 16.275 + 0.175 = 40.4375 mi (40mi 35ch)
Via Tamworth: 0.675 + 7.1 + 9.9 + 23.375 + 0.175 = 41.225mi (41mi 18ch)

Hrm...I appear to have gained another 12 chains from somewhere.

Curzon Street Junction (0mi) - Aston South Junction (2mi 61ch) = 2mi 61ch (2.7625mi) (MD320)
Aston South Junction (1mi 60ch) - Aston North Junction (1mi 73ch) = 13ch (0.1625mi) (MD320)

Ah - I think the change of mileage on MD320 at Aston South Junction doesn't apply unless you're coming from Stechford, and the mileage from Curzon St Jn continues round via Aston and Perry Barr as far as Bushbury Jn - I think MD320 shouldn't say "change of mileage", and it should only be on MD315. A glance on Google Maps suggests that Curzon St-Aston is definitely shorter than Stechford-Aston - if so that accounts for the 1mi 1ch difference, so I think the correct figure is 39mi 34ch.

Can't fault your logic for via Tamworth, though, not sure how I ended up with an extra 14 chains, and I don't have the newest edition of Quail to hand to check... Odd.

The most reliable figures I am aware of are from the Railway Performance Society distance charts (Site open to anyone, but distance charts only accessible by members.)
Birmingham - Derby via Tamworth = 41.19 miles (41m 15c.)
(More if you go via Whitacre Junction)

Birmingham - Lichfield - Derby = 39.38 miles (39m 30 c.) via Viaduct near Proof House, 0.01 mile longer via down Vauxhall curve.

Just had a look at the "Mileage Enquiry" facility in TRUST, which gives 39 miles 35 chains via Lichfield and 41 miles 24 chains via Tamworth.

More accurate than me. Checked against a journey routed that way and came out with 39m (couldn't be sure how to do a mileage search)

It's one of the options on the TSIA menu. You need to know the STANOX for each location though and it only gives a total distance, not the route it's followed.
