Last night I was was watching a repeat of Gordon Ramsay and they had the 5 things people would most like to ban from restaurants and it made me think what is the 5 most annoying habits of other passengers on the railway. For me the most annoying habits of other passengers and why to me are:

1. Passengers making a large amount of noise in the Quiet Zone - I don't care if its an important call or if your kids are quiet normally the quiet zone rule applies to everyone.

2. Passengers intentionally travelling without a valid ticket or an incorrect ticket - Says itself really people who deliberately defraud the railway are low life scum there is no two ways about it.

3. Passengers smoking on the platform - Its been illegal since 2007 and not just that its rude to blow smoke into someone face especially on what can get quite a crowded place.

4 Passengers sit in my reserved seat - Clearly the sign saying "Reserved [my name]" or "Reserved from xxxxxx to xxxxxxxx]" has no real meaning its just there for decoration according to them.

5 passengers who put bags on seats or sit on the aisle side so they don't have to sit next to anyone - Its just plane rude no matter what reasons you have for it, bags don't have more rights that other passenger.

Many of these habits are of course are banned but they still happen, what would you say the 5 most annoying habits of other passengers are for you?

For me, the most annoying behaviour is that of the person who stands behind me on the platform, coughing loudly while I'm trying to have a quiet fag, who then tries to stop my boisterous kids from distracting the ticket inspector long enough so we can bunk off at the next station ;)

And then wonder why the train is "over crowded" because they all want the doors closest to the stairs!

All of these need some context though. I have actually been recommended to do number four by a guard on a busy XC train; he just added that we should be prepared to give it up when requested.
Number five, again, if you put your stiff on the seat it does not mean that you don't want to give up the seat. It may be for instance you put it thee when the train is empty, but then forget to move it when the train gets busier.
Context is key to everything

P.S. "people who deliberately defraud the railway are low life scum." All of them, really?

Passengers eating smelly foods on train, be it cheesey crisps, Mcdonald's, Domino's Pizza, or anything else that smells. No place for it on board trains in my opinion. Would rather sit next to someone listening to loud music.

Same with oranges. I personally find the smell of oranges really overpowering and intrusive. My biggest annoyance is the bags on seats thing, its just plain passive aggressive most of the time.

Point number 3 is one that gets on my nerves, I once told someone if they want to fag it do it outside the station and someone else saying that they thought it only covered the large stations until I told them its the whole lot. Point number 5 also annoys me, so what I do is intentially sit on the seat so they have no choice but to shift their crap from the seat.

Another one is when people get on with an unfolded pushchair, I'll usually ask them that they may have to fold it down should anymore passengers board or if the guard asks. One took my pushbike onboard once and kindly asked the person who had a pushchair if they minded that they'd fold down it down as its a cycle space. What I got in return was a torrent of abuse by some fat overweight Labour voting non entity (well, it was at Sheffield) claiming that its a pushchair space for their, quite frankly oversized 4x4 pushchair. Needless to say I accidently on purpose made sure that I got oil, that had come out of the suspension, smeared onto the idiots pushchair as I disembarked at Goole.

Another one is when you find uni students taking over a table seat for their coursework and sheepbook pro, thus in the process giving you no leg space whatsoever as they're swinging their legs around like an inefficiant wind turbine.

1. Feet on seats. I sometimes wonder if people born after 1985 are physically able to sit comfortably with both feet on the floor (my observations are not solely from public transport).

2. Cheap, crappy earphones supplied with phones/media players turned up loud. Clueless, just clueless. (Thankfully, the craze for listening to music on loudspeaking mobile phones has subsided somewhat - at least here in the provinces.)

3. Ticketless wonders. There's an open booking office at that station - either you should have turned up earlier or wait 15 minutes for the next train!

4. Those clowns who make or receive a phone call, convey the necessary message in 30 seconds and then spend the next ten minutes yakking inanely.

5. Groups of 4 or more people WHO HAVE TO SHOUT AT EACH OTHER!

I could go on...

"Right, we all want to get on this train, and the best way to do this quickly is to crowd round the doors so that people who want to get off are unable to do so ... " <(

Also, are that many empty wine bottles/lager cans necessary at 8:30am?

if you put your stiff on the seat it does not mean that you don't want to give up the seat.

It would have that effect, though. Not to mention keeping the seats in front, behind and on the other side of the aisle free :)

I'm sorry, I'll go and sit on the naughty step.

Anyway, things that annoy me:

1) This increasingly common habit of people watching things on tablets with no earphones. No, group of Scottish ladies, we don't all want to listen to "Come Dine With Me"

2) People listening to mp3 players with poor volume control. Tschk-tschk-tschk. Bah.

3) People who don't turn off the sound on their phone keypads. Beep, beep, beep-beep. There's a pattern developing here.

4) Loud mobile phone conversations. It's perfectly possible to talk on the phone without the rest of us listening to how your piles are being treated or (the most common one by far) how you're the only competent employee at your workplace and how everything good happens because of you and anything that goes wrong is because you weren't listened to.

5) Uncontrolled kids. Anywhere - I recently had a doctor's appointment and when I entered the waiting room there was a small child climbing all over a bloke in the corner. When the kid's name was called it was a man sat on the other side of the room who got up and took him in. The first chap just looked relieved. The poor sod had nothing to do with the boy at all!

It might not have escaped your notice, but I really don't like extraneous noise. I especially find high pitched noises hard to cope with, which might explain my aversion to Valenta powered HSTs ;)

It's amazing really that I love the sound of locomotives, not to mention good music.

I don't mind people congregating around one area, though, as it means I can go and stand by myself and have a much better chance of getting a seat on a busy commuter train. If they want to fight it out, let 'em.

Cheers

Maybe the train ran all night and the TOC didn't have time/bother to clean it.

I see no problem if it is at the end of the station (no canopy) and there are no people about.

In my experience, it's often been the 'I'm wearing a suit, I'm travelling on business, my table need is 48485420402 times more important than yours' type who are the most guilty - some of us actually sit at the table, have manners and engage in conversation with fellow travelers when they equally make conversation.

If it was legal then fine but its against the law if its outside or not on any platform except Merseyrail and ScotRail I think as well as some specific station exemptions.

And I bet they've all bought tickets from the Sheepline... Baaaaa

Seriously, this is a big issue that annoys a lot of guards. There are four available doors any everyone is trying to get on at one (replace number depending on stock), despite you blowing a whistle and telling them to use all available doors. There are times you arrive at a train and find the front coach empty, but your rear vestibule that you need to work from is full of people stood because it's nearer the entrance and exit - they often grumble when told to move to the front coach, as I need to work the train from here :-x

Only minor niggles and in no particular order:-

1. People who croud around the doors at terminal stations trying to board when no one has even got off and there is no driver in the cab. Whats the rush.

2. The people getting off said train stopping the second they get off the train to extend the handle on their wheely case.

3. People not even bothering using headphones so they can share their awful taste in music with everyone. I'm often tempted to do the same with my awful taste in music to drown them out, I like death metal.

4. People being abusive to staff.

5. People bunking on, it forces the fare up for me.

People smoking on platforms really doesn't bother me as long as they don't do it close to other people. I smoke myself but not anywhere I am not supposed to. Slightly unrelated but one thing that really annoyed me was when I was smoking waiting for a bus (Well away from the bus stop) on a very busy road heading in to Liverpool which was subject to a traffic jam full of cars and large lorries a bloke walking towards me started fake coughing as he got near me.

Passengers listening to music via apple earphones (as they leak more than the Titanic), even at low volumes.
Passengers who crowd around the doors at a station blocking the exit of passengers alighting, or try and force their way onto the train against the direction of travel.

Chewing Gum (ever sat opposite someone who spends the entire journey showing his/her gum when eating it?)

Yes, if you don't want to pay you don't travel. I want to travel First Class but I don't want to pay that much so I travel standard.

I envy you for never being annoyed by anything. You must have a good life. :D

Yep. Happily retired on my railway pension. :D

Seriously though, I used to drive the motorways for a living. Getting all worked up was simply bad for my blood pressure.

Extraneous noise annoys me too, I don't care if your kids are running up down the aisle as long as they do it quietly.

Not as annoying as those b******s who leave their used chewing gum stuck under tables or seats.

I saw the mention of laptops earlier, it's a rule that if you own a macbook you have to display it on the table when doing something else.

By the looks of this the habit of other passengers that we find most annoying the most is people not using earphones to listen to things or having the volume on too loud through earphones so that other passengers can hear it.
