Because each flow (or at least the majority) still has a separate fare published- the zonal system simply dictates what the price of that fare is.

GBP routes are used from a limited number of stations which are authorised to do Oyster topups. Customers wouldn't ever see these.

Route AAA 7-9 etc. are used from stations in Zones 7 - 9 and WFJ to London Zones 1/2 - 6. This is how Z1-7, 1-8, 1-9, 2-9 etc. Travelcards are done. Some of the other AAA routes are there to permit doublebacking which normally isn't allowed.

Route London Zones 1 - 6 is used for season tickets requiring cross London travel. I've used this route to create fares that don't exist, such as Reading - Tonbridge. I calcluate this by doing Reading to 0035 + Tonbridge to 0035 - 6909 to 0035.

Helsby appears as a route for a few season tickets in the Cheshire area though I should hope nobody actually tries to sell one of those to a customer.

Route Direct is used by Virgin Trains for fares between London and the Trent Valley, specifically not valid via Birmingham. I don't know how popular it is though given the paucity of TV stopping services outside of the peaks.

I've only ever seen Not For Travel on tour bus tickets I've sold.

It is because as well as being defined from one location (e.g. a station) to another, fares can also be defined between station groups, clusters or counties. My program includes all the locations/stations within the clusters when calculating the total number of point-to-point fares - which leads to a very high count for the Holyhead fares because typically there is a flow routed that way for every station in Ireland, north & south to every station in Britain.

The rarer routes might just be used once but between a pair of clusters, which means the actual number of point-to-point fares is greater than one.

Oh that one's very interesting. It is used for some kind of Centro West Midlands season ticket and is defined for a lot of flows in the West Midlands. E.g. Water Orton to Birmingham Stations has a ticket type ND1 "NTR DD MTH" season at £53.20, with restriction code DB:

This system is such a hack! Even Avantix Traveller can't handle it; if you try to query, for example DALSTON JUNCTION to OYSTER PREPAY it comes up with an error "Too many fare records read".

and then for what I presume is every possible Oyster top-up amount from £1 to £90, there is a separately routed fare with routes going from "GBP1 ONE" to "GBP90 NINETY" and an associated fare of ticket type OTU "OYSTER PREPAY" for the correct value ranging from £1.00 to £90.00. I can't make out what all the different routes are needed for! It just looks like some ugly hack for accounting purposes, but there must be a severe deficiency in the interface between different computer systems somewhere if something as ugly as this is needed. IMHO anyway

This system is such a hack! Even Avantix Traveller can't handle it; if you try to query, for example DALSTON JUNCTION to OYSTER PREPAY it comes up with an error "Too many fare records read".

OYSTER PREPAY (NLC J103) has been added as a destination and there is a flow defined to there from cluster Q498, which contains

There's also NLC J102 (OYSTER DEPOSIT). No prizes for guessing what that's for!

It's a fudge to process Oyster PAYG transactions in the same way as a conventional ticket for accounting purposes, as the LENNON spec doesn't distinguish between them, and requires a Ticket Type, Amount, Transaction Number, Origin, Destination and Route...amongst other things.

Short version: A combination of TfL's product, their rules, and railway accountancy specifications.

Longer version: There's more space for routes (100000, though "normal" routes are only three digits) than there is for ticket types (theoretically 17576, but somewhat less than that IIRC, as the number of valid initial letters is limited) and "Private Settlement" NLCs (4995).

And limiting Oyster top ups to fixed multiples would cause no end of hassle for staff...Would you be happy to have to put a fiver on your card when you only needed to put, say, 50p on there for your intended journey?

I certainly wouldn't be happy topping up my kids' zip cards with £5 when we only use them a few times a year. The kids off-peak cap is only £1 (soon to be £1.30) and I don't leave any money on them in case they get lost or stolen (particularly in the case of the secondary school child as petty theft is quite a problem at times).

That's a good explanation! I was thinking more of the difficulties implementing software that reads the fares database Most flows have a max of about 10 different routes and even that is quite rare, but the flow to OYSTER PREPAY has 90 and could catch some programmers out who didn't see that coming (like me)...

I don't see what the problem is with the current system in place. Not everybody tops up in multiples of £5. I have multiples of £5 up to £50 saved as favourites, if somebody asks for xx amount (in whole £s only) I just change the route to 300xx.

It's worth noting that POP and PAP type tickets are exclusively loaded onto Oyster cards using the same method as top up, though I don't use them as they aren't necessarily the same as what's in the TfL Fares Finder.

There's also NLC J102 (OYSTER DEPOSIT). No prizes for guessing what that's for!

Only to be used if you actually have to sell the things!
