Long time lurker, but this is my first post :D

I see that the next stage of Motherwell Station development is going to tender which is great news as i use the station regularly. I was surprised to read that is to develop the feasibility design into detailed design. I didn't know that a GRIP 3 design had been completed!

Does anyone know who did the Feasibility GRIP 3 design?

Cheers in advance.

Good to hear it's going to tender, I forgot it was in line for redevelopment so had to look at the concept again.

It'll be welcome for sure, I use it as an interchange station quite frequently and the current building is looking a bit rough and dated now.

For anyone interested, here's the notice that this post is based on:- https://www.publiccontractsscotland.gov.uk/search/show/search_view.aspx?ID=AUG292886

Indeed. The station has been overdue a bit of TLC.

Also welcome to the forum ss12345. :)

The inside of the station is okay I think, it's mostly the exterior with the old SPT paint around the roof peeling away.

Only other station I can think of off the top of my head with SPT colours still around is Coatbridge Sunnyside.

Hopefully things will have calmed down by the summer and work gets started on the station.

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/start-date-plans-announced-new-21712802

Start date and plans announced for new-look £14.5m Motherwell rail station

A multi-million pound transformation of Motherwell train station is on track to begin this summer, it has just been announced.

A deal has been struck to appoint Balfour Beatty as contractors of the exciting project, which will go hand-in-hand with the “dynamic and forward looking” development of the town.

The £14.5m project will see the station undergo redevelopment work, as well as an overhaul of the public realm outside the station building, improving links between bus and train services as well as reducing congestion.

ScotRail, North Lanarkshire Council, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), and Transport Scotland have all teamed up with a vision to turn Motherwell station into a gleaming gateway to Glasgow city centre.

Work on a new regional transport integration hub at Motherwell station is set to get underway, and once complete the project will deliver:

An enhanced station forecourt and building with glazed roof and brighter, larger concourse.

Improved ticket retailing facilities.

Enhanced retail environment with food and drink offering.

Refurbished customer toilets and waiting facilities.

Improvements to pedestrian and cycling access.

Expansion of bus facility on Muir Street.

New facilities for taxis, car drop-offs and disabled parking.

Expansion of nearby park and ride facilities at Farm Street.

The project will be delivered in two phases, with work on the station redevelopment due to start by this summer, and the transport integration works following in 2021.

Seeing this and a thread relating to Carstairs ...
Would there be any virtue in having trains like those going Birmingham - Edinburgh to go via eg Motherwell?
I have no real feel for the relationships between places in that Central belt between Glasgow and Edinburgh, let alone Stirling/ Perth/ Inverness (and Dundee? etc??)
I do recall trains from 'the South' dividing at Carstairs- front portion to Glasgow; rear for Edinburgh.
Is there 'local' business at Carstairs- showing my ignorance. I could go Googling, but heh what's this Forum for but such accumulated wisdom ...

Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke do need a decent Edinburgh service as the current provision isn’t enough.

Would be a detour if trains went via Motherwell then to Edinburgh from Brum. Motherwell has gained more TPE stops . There is a lot of commuting to Edinburgh, its not long time wise to Edinburgh.

From what I've seen there's very little business deriving from Carstairs. I'm under the impression that the occasional sevices which do serve the village do so more out of contractual obligation than financial reward. I'm not even sure that even these sparse visits haven't succumbed to the dreaded virus in the emergency timetable; the first one of the day certainly has. As for services to Edinburgh; I'd like to see a Lanark option too, should that be feasible.

Wikipedia says that the population was 914 in the 2011 census, which is more than I would have thought. There's been new housing. The only employer of any size is the State Hospital, the secure mental health facility.
Is Motherwell suitable as a Parkway for SE Glasgow? I feel that it is much easier for many people to get to the airport than to access the trains.

I appreciate there are a lot of considerations to make, incl e.g. populations, travel-to-train distances/ ease/ times, existing patterns, potential, cost ,...

Would be pleased if someone could point me to something somewhere that shows what these plans for Motherwell station are planned to achieve or facilitate

Someone had the ideas that became Bristol Parkway, reversals at Nottingham, shorter more frequent trains ... Is it possible to see something of this kind of Planning- please tell me; I'm new! Something for another thread maybe.
