Hi,

Did Network Rail ever consider making the junction between the canal tunnels and the East Coast Main Line grade separated?

I doubt there's the space - it's also worth remembering that the 'slows' are already on the west side by that point, the southbound slow having crossed the fasts on using the Holloway flyover which was put in as part of the electrification in the 70s.

The only benefit of grade separating would be to keep the northbound slow clear as that's the one being blocked when a train enters / leaves that junction.

There’s not the space without widespread demolition. And it’s not needed under normal circumstances.

When the full ThamesLink timetable is introduced (2025 anyone) the only services likely to be approaching Kings Cross on the slows are the peak hour extras to / from KX.

And as someone pointed out a few weeks ago when the same question came up, some down trains can always leave Kings Cross on the down fast and cross to down slow somewhere else. if that fits the timetable better...

with vast, expensive, works it would be possible to re-route the Long Distance through the disused bore of Copenhagen tunnels, and the suburban through the tunnel currently used by the fasts. Belle Isle would then need to be re-configured/rebuilt with an additional flyover,

If you were to get a seriously big budget together you could even go for running it as a six track railway to Finsbury Park, becoming an eight track railway there (with a rebuilt station) and cross platform transfer between Thameslink and the NCL, with the Thameslink tracks finally joining Slows and the GN suburbans the Fasts at Alexandra Palace. This would allow greater separation of the four service groups (Long Distance IC, Cambridge Fast & Peak Time GN, Thameslink and Moorgate) on approach to the core/their terminals providing a buffer to help with perturbations to schedules.

And the full Thameslink 24tph timetable should parallel move all services to/from the core at Belle Isle anyway.

I believe you will find RAIL has published in recent months that NR will re-open the disused bores at Kings Cross for trains.
