After the last few years of the whole is it or isn't it anonymous the awaited 2023 "Your Voice" survey is here, after the publishing of some off the comments last year on one area by the ROM (Regional Operations Manager) will you be completing it?

Enter DOB and your Employee number into an anonymous survey so a third party who without consent has your details to check them off and compile a report for the LOM (Local Operations Manager) area you are attached to, apparently this is to tell them how many people have not replied!

Anonymous or not I won't be be completing it, whats your thoughts people?

What do these abbreviations mean?

I can't tell whether on not this is exclusively for Network Rail employees (what about contractors/secondments?).

I presume M8CRT is from the signalling side of NR (Network Rail). ROM is a Regional Operations Manager and LOM is a Local Operations Manager. The "survey" is for all NR employees. After a year of industrial unrest withing the railway, do they really need this to tell them what the staff think of the company?

It wouldn't look good if they blew it off either though.

It's also been anonymous. And of course they have consent to do it - when you do it!

The way it works is that it divides out your teams which is why then require employee number in first instance. The survey company then converts this into some of code which gives team but non-identifying (e.g. respondent 0001012561451). And hence it does a calculation on expected responses in team with actual responses.

Therefore you would only get an email from your line manager saying "Only 40% of you have completed so far" as opposed to "M8CRT you haven't completed your survey". This method is used all the time for surveys and other things that involve private data, so you'd have nothing to worry about. Certainly when I've done similar surveys there have often been FAQs about "If its anonymous why do I have to put in my name and details?" with an explainer. And when I've been on the other side and seen those reports, there's no personal info. Of course if you write in a very particular style in a relatively smaller team then it might get picked up anyway!

And why would you complete it? Lots of companies use the aggregated responses to identify issues. This is a formalised way to complain.

So there is still no great need for you to have to insert your details pay No and DOB, a simple code identifying you senior manager that you could enter would do the job just as well.

Many people won't complete because they believe it's not anonymous, personally I thought the Q12 was a better system and was more anonymous than " Your Voice".

NR senior management are out of touch and a massive void exists between senior and lower management, with very little truth going up the hill and even less coming down!

I’ve not come across one person who holds that view I’m afraid, and when that view has come up previously the people who’ve held it have given no sensible justification, so I’d be surprised if there’s one here

Speaking in deeply general terms, in the case of companies seeking feedback people in the company not letting other people in the company know about glaring organisational problems in order to effect a solution rather than be part of the problem is a bit like (in signalling terms now) having a points failure and bringing all trains to a stand close to it, whilst refusing to fault it or advise any drivers or any signaller because of a sure and certain belief that the points failure fairy will fly down from the clouds and fix it with their sparkly wand. Not talking about any particular individual’s attitudes or any particularly organisation, just in general.

It's not as bad as my current employer who do the same. "Anonymous" surveys in a place where the morale has swirled down the toilet faster, and yet they ask:
DOB
Depot
Gender
Age range
Years of service

Anonymous indeed.
