New Ayr railway station plans could see part of Station Hotel bulldozed
South Ayrshire Council are moving forward with plans for a new station and transport hub.
A new vision for the main gateway into Ayr could see part of the Station Hotel demolished to make way for a modern new railway station, fresh plans reveal.
Council chiefs have announced they are working on an ‘Ayr Town Centre plan’, with proposals to transform the top part of the town, which take in Burns Statue Square, including a new railway station and/ or transport interchange.
As part of The Strategic Governance Group, which includes Transport Scotland, Network Rail and ScotRail, South Ayrshire Council's proposals look to see the southern section of the Station Hotel demolished - to the tune of £6.6 million - to make way for the transport hub.
Network Rail is also considering concepts for a newly integrated railway station, taking advantage of any demolition.
And it has been confirmed that the railway firm will pay half the £60,000 monthly costs of the scaffolding and encapsulation works of the building, which the council have been shelling out for since they assumed control of the site under a Dangerous Building Notice in 2018.
