At 6.22 on March 28, 2018 a new station and extra passengertracks will come into service in the Netherlands. The line from Groningen to Roodeschool (dutch joke: where are the communist raised? Red school) will be extended to Eemshaven. Therefore the station of Roodeschool has been moved a little bit north. In the winter it will only 1 train arriving and departing; in the summer it will be a different story for a day out, because there is a connection with a ferry to the island of Borkum in Germany.

Is Borkum a particularly popular destination for the Dutch?
I see from Wikipedia that the other Dutch Friesian islands nearby are not inhabited/nature reserves. Fascinating area.

Popular enough for a bus connection from Groningen (the place, not the OP!) to the ferry in summer, the ferry itself is busy (it's a much shorter crossing than from Emden) and Borkum is a bustling resort. The alternative island is Texel, but that's a long way west.
I wonder if the rationale is to encourage car-free travel to the island?
Incidentally, the ferry company is advertising day trips the other way - so people holidaying on the island can visit Groningen or Leeuwarden or Stavoren.

There is no need to have a car on the Island of Borkum. Everything is close together on walking distance. Otherwise you get a bike; Borkum has even an airport for the rich and famous. In Germany there are some direct trains to and from Emden Aussenhafen (even a IC from Köln Hbf).

See it as being Guernsey or Jersey; it is closer to France than England. Only thing is that i do not see someone drive with a car to a French port (say) Granville and take the ferry from there. The difference in price between Eemshaven and Emden to Borkum is about 3 to 4 euro. It is more that the time on the ferry is longer.

By the way; Arriva has made promotion about this new station with decorating train 336.
