I get the 1739 from Reading to Newbury racecourse with a change of trains at Newbury - a route advertised via national rail.

Sometimes I get picked up in Newbury or go there after work for a drink

Can I technically go through the barrier at Newbury and claim it as a break of journey even though it is further down the line?

Yes and although there is no price difference for off-peak tickets, an anytime ticket from Reading to Newbury Racecourse is cheaper than one to Newbury so the latter is never worth buying, although I'm sure that plenty of people unknowingly waste money by doing so every day!

I think that the answer is no. So far as I can tell, the journey planners rely on a routeing guide easement to offer you a Reading-Newbury-Racecourse routeing for a Reading-Racecourse ticket and, although the easement isn't brilliantly worded, the idea seems to be that you can go via Newbury if you are travelling Reading-Racecourse or Racecourse-Reading. The easement doesn't seem to assist if you are only making a Reading-Newbury journey.
