How do the ticket prices vary so much ?

If I was able to travel on 11th June, the return ticket would be £5.90, certainly quite a bargain for almost 6 hours of travel (with a senior railcard)

However, for my two possible travel dates .. 25th June or 23rd July, the price for the exact same journey jumps to £25.20 *

If I wait a couple more weeks to book .. is this price likely to be reduced ?

Thanks !

* Yes, there's the option of a £12.65 off-peak day return

Advances have not yet been released for those dates so you are best waiting. What won't happen is that they'll get more expensive than the flexible tickets, there's no harm in waiting.

@Willie Bee. Think you're - possibly unfairly - comparing the cost of two railcard discounted advances (at their lowest possible price and, of course, always subject to availability) with two walk-up railcard discounted Off Peak Day Singles, one each way.

Ordinarily, you wouldn't ever pay for two Off Peak Day Singles (at £12.60 each) for a there and back journey such at this, on the same day (a Sunday), you'd just pay 5p extra for the Off Peak Day Return priced at £12.65.

As I understand it, British rail wasn't a fan of single tickets. They preferred to sell returns because it gave them more opertunities to actually charge the fare. So while there were saver returns (now off-peak returns) and cheap day returns (now off-peak day returns) there were no corresponding discounted singles.

While it's a long time since the end of BR, their legacy remains for "wak-up" tickets on many routes, with off-peak singles either not existing at all or being only barely cheaper than the corresponding return.

On the other hand advance tickets are always singles.

What has happened since Covid, is that advance tickets are being released much later than they should be, particularly for weekend travel.

Be aware that said ticket is route restricted to "VIA HARTLEPOOL" there don't seem to be any "any permitted" off peak day returns, though there is an any permitted off peak return,

The "via Hartlepool" route, is, however the one taken by the direct, no changes required, Northern service, there and back. That may well suit the OP.
