Yuri Kogen Railway, a third-sector railway in Akita Prefecture, averaged just 508 passengers per day in 2022 (a result of the declining population along the line). To increase passenger numbers and therefore boost revenue, the railway's president decided to drastically reduce the price of student passes by half. Take a look at the various initiatives currently being employed by Yuri Kogen Railway. And in "Tourist Trains in Style" see JR East's "KAIRI," which runs between Niigata and Yamagata prefectures.

This episode from NHK’s “Japan Railway Journal“ series is well worth a look to see how declining rail use is being tackled on a minor route in rural Japan. Scotrail could learn from this and Caledonian Sleeper might get some ideas from the second part.

Only in Japan could there be a studio set like this 笑う

Very interesting. I was thinking this kind of thing would work better on the more rural lines, eg: HOWL etc. Some interesting comments from the CEO about not being able to get passengers if they run at inconvenient times, and also a 50% decrease in ticket prices resulted in a much greater (proportionally) increase in passengers....who knew?

Also, look at the interior of that train and compare with, say, a 153 !!!

I am sure Stadler would make an offer for comfy panoramic BEMUs for Scotrail - at a price though;)
