Hi, I am planning on catching the sleeper to Penzance with 3 other friends next year. What are the seated cars like? We are also planning on taking 4 bikes with us, would this be ok, or would it be better to take a day train instead? Also, is Groupsave 4 valid on the sleeper?

Haven't done it too recent but it hasn't really changed as far as I'm aware.
The seats are ex HST First Class seats, so are comfortable enough. There is also a luggage/bike section too but unsure if you need a reservation for bikes, though I can't imagine you would need too.

The last time I did the seated part I only got bit of sleep as there was a group of business men who were intent of staying awake all night talking loudly about this that and the other, but other times it can be quiet, just depends really.

I can't help you with the Groupsave question, but you can walk onto the seated sleeper with normal return tickets on a walk up fare, so I would imagine Groupsave would be valid, could someone confirm?

Cheers,

James.

Seated carriages are like First Class day trains with 2+1 seating around tables and comfortable seating. I believe you can take bikes on the sleeper as there is a large luggage area but I am not sure, you would be best contacting FGW about that. Groupsave is valid on the sleeper but it would be cheaper to book advance purchase tickets, but that would offer you no flexibility with journey times and dates. A groupsave-4 super off peak return would cost £165.20. A super off peak single would be £95. Advance fares would cost from £60 each way.

I found this online if this helps:

"Bicycles: You can take bikes on the Night Riviera sleeper train free of charge, placed in one of the three special bike racks in the guard's van. A bike reservation must be made as the number of bike spaces is limited. To reserve your bike, call First Great Western on 0845 678 6980, lines open 08:00-22:00 daily. Tandems aren't carried."

(site was last updated Jan 2010)

Might be worth calling it up

I've done the Riveria sleeper twice this year. First time was quite funny. A group of about a dozen chinese people got on. They talked their own lingo and kept the whole coach up. However, the kids they had with them were sleeping across the tables & on the floors! THIS IS NO JOKE. I politely asked them to SHUTUP after Reading as it was quite irritating. Then they had the cheek to give off about my alarm going off at 0310 to photograph the train in exeter!

Quid pro que:) that's what tables & floors are for.
