North Downs ticket from London

I'm thinking of doing a trip along the whole of the North Downs line. What's the cheapest ticket(s) for doing that as a trip from a London terminal that takes me along the whole route and back to London?

Details:

Probably want to start before 9.30
Probably a weekday although weekend is possible too.
Don't currently have a network railcard although would get one if it was paying for a lot of its cost on the trip.
No need to double back on myself although might want to get off and break my journey.
Ideally want to avoid doubling back e.g. London to Redhill to Reading to London.
I'm not massively bothered by cost, I'm more just looking to not get ripped off or get in trouble for breaching journey conditions.

The most obvious way to do it in my view is to get a ticket from Purley to Reading via + Any Permitted, with a separate ticket for London to Purley, but someone did suggest a suitable ticket via personal message to the original poster that would be valid.
