Hi all

Just a question regarding annual leave. Once you "pass out" what is the starting annual leave entitlement that a train driver would get. This is relating to Northern but any other information regarding different TOCs may be helpful for others.

Additionally, does this increase following continued service.

Assuming you are currently a trainee or at least have accepted a job offer then the best thing to do would be to contact HR.

If you are not in that position then it’s a bit of a run before you can walk question tbh as the odds of getting the job are low when you take in to account the applicants vs positions available.

I imagine most tocs are different too.

Would as the above said differ between TOCs. As far as I know at my current TOC the Leave is mostly built into the roster as a 8 week on and then 2 weeks off. Think there is also a few days of actual additional leave that can be taken anytime of approved by Rosters.

4 weeks leave, assigned to you. One week spring; two weeks summer; one week winter. You can swap with colleagues. You also get 8 days floating to use whenever you like.. subject to availability of Leave on the days requested.

It would indeed differ between TOCs. The former Great Eastern section of Greater Anglia and Crossrail work the 8/2 pattern, (Crossrail copied it from GA as Gidea Park depot already worked it) but I'm not aware of anywhere else.

Yep this is how it works for Northern. It can be inconvenient having to use blocks of 7 days (Sunday-Saturday) all the time instead of having the flexibility to book days when you want.

Other TOCs just give you X number of days leave to request when you want like in a normal job.

Thank you for the support with this. I am starting my course in July. Can you take the floating days as days here and there ?
Yes, as long as depot quota isn't filled for that specific day. Very useful when you want to turn a long weekend into say a week off.

May also be local agreements on what can be done if quota is full, but that's one to find out when you get to specific depot

After your training at the academy you have an opportunity to take leave when you want during your driving hours with an instructor. However, once you pass out you are allocated 4 weeks leave. One of which is a 2 week block. You then have 9 floating days subject to cover. Depending on depot there are special arrangements for booking leave on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. If you’re trying to book a Saturday off at short notice be prepared to be denied. Although you can swap with colleagues.

Once you pass out and are no longer in the Supernumerary link at the time of year when holidays are allocated. Until then you're free to pick.

8 days. Subject to cover however a certain number are guaranteed leave per day.

Northern on the west is 4 weeks allocated and 9 individual days. This increases to 13 days after 15yrs service

For clarification, Northern is divided into 'East' and 'West', with different terms and conditions - I won't go into the reasons why now. If you're interested to know whether a specific depot is East or West I'll be happy to let you know.

On the East you get five weeks off with eight floating days. On the West you get four weeks and nine floating days.

There's actually 3 completely different sets of T+C's. Ex ATN (what you refer to as the East), Ex FNW (what you refer to as the West) and Ex TPE (certain links at Blackpool and Barrow)

Thank you, I'd forgotten the former TPE links - well beyond my patch!
