Hi all,
My manager at work has asked me to find out a journey for two people.

They want to travel from Nottingham or Newark Northgate (they are halfway between the two) to Swindon, travelling out on Wednesday 26th November, to arrive in Swindon by 11am, and depart on Thursday 27th November, to leave Swindon at 11am.

No railcards and no advance tickets please.

Thank you everyone in advance

The cheapest sensible option looks to be to go from Nottingham and avoid London:

Tickets - £85.50 per person

Anytime Return: Nottingham to Leamington Spa £38.50
Anytime Day Single: Leamington Spa to Banbury £7.50
Off-Peak Day Single: Banbury to Oxford £5.90
Off-Peak Day Single (Not Via Reading): Oxford to Swindon £10.50
Super Off-Peak Single (Not Via Reading): Swindon to Oxford £9.70
Off-Peak Day Single: Oxford to Banbury £5.90
Anytime Day Single: Banbury to Leamington Spa £7.50

Trains - Out

06:37 - 09:14 Nottingham - Oxford (XC)
09:37 - 09:49 Oxford - Didcot Parkway (FGW)
09:57 - 10:14 Didcot Parkway - Swindon (FGW)

Trains - Return

11:11 - 11:28 Swindon - Didcot Parkway (FGW)
11:38 - 11:50 Didcot Parkway - Oxford (FGW)
12:07 - 14:06 Oxford - Derby (XC)
14:13 - 14:41 Derby - Nottingham (EMT)

You can try other times, etc., at trainmiser.com

I would suggest a simpler split:

Anytime Return (SOR) Nottingham to Leamington Spa £38.50 (a surprisingly reasonable price for a CrossCountry-priced SOR!)
Off-Peak Return (SVR) Leamington Spa to Swindon £40.50

Total £79 each. I can't see any obvious reason why TrainMiser is missing this; quite strange.

Thanks. It's being too aggressive in applying the restriction (Code WO wouldn't be valid on that train from Birmingham, say) - I'll have a think about the best way to fix this.

As far as I've been able to make out through trial and error, booking engines apply time restrictions only to
  • the stations where a passenger boards and alights each train travelled on during a journey
  • the final destination of each train travelled on during a journey (arrival restrictions only)

Is it OK being off-peak as the train leaves Leamington Spa at 0838, not sure on the restriction code that applies to that, many thanks for the times.

Yes, that's fine. The restriction text says "Off-Peak tickets from stations not listed are valid for connections into trains departing as shown above".

Leamington isn't on the "Westbound travel" list, so the first train on that ticket is just a valid connection into a train from Oxford. They'd leave Oxford well after 8:40, so the tickets are fine.

If they get a 2-together railcard it would more than pay for itself just on this one trip? A minor palaver with photos I suppose, but it is an unusual manager who is not interested in saving money!
