A tram has derailed this morning following a collision with a van at the junction of Berridge Road and Noel Street in Nottingham.

This junction is an unsignalled crossroads, however there are STOP signs on Berridge Road (where the van was coming from).

No prizes for guessing who appears to be at fault….

“The operator of Nottingham's tram network has issued an update on when a busy junction will reopen after a crash. The collision, involving a tram and a van, has completely blocked off the Noel Street junction with Berridge Road in Forest Fields, while police are at the scene.

The tram has derailed and is in the process of being removed by maintenance workers, which is causing "significant travel disruption" for passengers. NET Trams said there is no service running between the Forest and Wilkinson Street stops in both directions due to the incident, which is reported to have happened at around 10.45am.”

I took some photos during the rerailing. Tram 223 was involved, and it wasn't pretty but I think it's more cosmetic, and the tram will be off for around a month.

Photos show the damaged tram.

Looks worse that it is, definitely. Not as serious as the Rotherham tram-train collisions, but glad everyone walked away from this all the same.

If you can somehow not notice a tram, and drive straight out of a side road with a STOP sign (not even "Give Way") and into the front of the tram, you really shouldn't be on the road.

If it was a van then the tram probably rudely interrupted the van driver’s phone call……

All the street signs in Nottingham nowadays are filthy, and tend to blend into the background far more than they should. I assume it's because the council have stopped cleaning them. Not that that excuses anything, though

These signs are pretty clear, personally I think more could potentially be done, but it was certainly the van driver not paying attention that caused this

Maybe he was planning to stop at the thick white "Stop" line across the carriageway.

I know it doesn't excuse anything, but all the holes in various safety mechanisms have to line up for an accident to occur.

Image shows Google Streetview of the vestigal STOP mark on Berridge Road carriageway, with an almost invisible white Stop line across the carriageway.

EDIT: I take it all back. From the photos above, these stop lines have been repainted since the Google Streetview was taken

It was a scaffolding lorry/ van with trailer sort of thing
Even more likely to be on the phone (or staring at satnav) than a delivery driver.
Surely all commercial vehicles have built in hands free by now? Not that I think that is much safer.
