The reign of the R32 cars on the New York City Subway has finally come to an end. See link below for details of the farewell runs. There's several videos on Youtube of the first day. Sadly it seems that the day was curtailed owing to idiots on board vandalising the train and refusing to get off for the shunt move at 145th St.

Technically there is no out of service shunt move at 145 Street Station. The train enters a middle track with platforms on both sides and "turns" by the train operator changing ends. In past years, the vintage R1/9 trains that ran during Christmas would do same, and doors on both sides of the train would open and remain open during the long layover.

The first weekend there was a rowdy crowd of "fans" that permeated the latter runs in the day. I observed some of them at West 4 Street Station on what would be the last northbound trip that day. The vandalism included tampering with the side destination roller signs (which requires a crank to change the displays), some commemorative car cards advertising the retirement of the R32 stolen, someone vaping, someone refusing to leave the train and most seriously--a fiberglass seat somehow being punctured.

Fortunately, the runs last weekend were less feral, and according to staff much better behaved. No incidents reported that I've heard of.

Last weekend the south motor (south car) had a replica of the original headsigns, marker lights and express/local sign installed.

For this weekend it seems the car "storm" door (end door) have been painted blue (possibly a vinyl adhesive) and the pantograph gates painted blue-- the latter which is not historically correct.

It seems each weekend the staff that toil to make this happen roll out a few more train enhancements, leading up to the final run on 9 January on the Brighton Line.

These runs are tremendous value, as the cost to ride is just the regular fare of $2.75. Some transit systems would charge extra for such runs and require advance booking.

I’ve got some gorgeous photos through the front of these cars looking into a sunset - lit Manhattan. Rickety as hell but they screamed Old New-York at you.

Back in 2007 I remember riding on one on the long fast section of the E line between 74th St/Roosevelt Ave/Jackson Hts and Queens Plaza. It was the most exhilarating ride I've ever had on any metro-type train, I don't know if it was going flat out but it certainly felt like it!

The last runs on the 9th are currently under threat now because some vandals broke into Coney Island Yard and stole various parts (such as seats and PA systems) from the remaining consist.

That segment is one of two places in the NYC transit system where the express and local tracks deviate under different street alignments. The express track follow the hypotenuse while the local tracks go two sides of a triangle. So the time savings is not only stations skipped but also due to more direct routing

Yesterday’s vandalism seems to be more than just the bog standard graffiti vandals who disfigure the car exterior. Some are speculating it may be rabid “railfans.”

They max out at around 45 mph. They used to hurtle through the tunnel linking Brooklyn and Manhattan on the A/C lines. Part of the fun was the brutal manner in which they were driven. They'd come into some platforms at 40 mph and screech to a halt in exactly the right place following a heavy brake application. 42nd St Port Authority Bus Terminal was a good place to watch them arriving as the platforms are slightly offset.

Seems odd to steal bits off the last serviceable set when there are dozens of other R32 cars stored in various yards.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Dammit, going to miss this by three or four months. R32 stock will be missed! Though it's another great excuse to get back to the Transit Museum in Brooklyn which will be the only place to find them from February.

This Sunday's final set of four roundtrips on the Brighton Line are a go! Here's hoping no further vandalism, or other perturbances such as loss of crew due to Covid. This past few weeks, several subway and bus routes have been either curtailed or run at reduced frequency because of short staffing.

I've just come across this recently shot video of R32 cars being taken away for scrap by NYNJ Rail along street tracks in Brooklyn:
