On my way up to Sheffield today I noticed that there was an off peak single and an off peak day single from Derby to Sheffield, does anyone know what the diffrence is?

The off peak single is valid for 5 days with break of journey.

The Off Peak Day Single is valid from 9am for one day only.

The Off Peak Single is valid from 9am and you may do an overnight break of journey and resume the next morning but no further break is allowed and travel must be completed by 1200. It's not valid for 5 days, no single ticket is that I am aware of.

The Off Peak Single is daft as an Anytime Single is only 70p more with more flexbility and if you are travelling after 9am then you would get the day single.

Or alternatively it's better to get a Wayfarer! (unless you have a railcard)

fares between derby and sheffield are set at 10p below the price of a derbyshire wayfarer, which offers all day travel on train and bus throughout derbyshire.;)

That's not correct either!

For Off-peak tickets travel has to be resumed by 1200 the following day, not completed:

National Rail Enquiries said:
Where Break of Journey is available on your specific journey, if you wish to stop overnight or it is not possible to complete the journey by 0230 on the day following the last day of validity, you may continue your journey the following morning. Travel must resume before 1200, where the time restrictions that apply to the ticket should be observed and no further break of journey is allowed except to change trains.

Slightly different for Off-peak DAY tickets, where you can travel overnight but have to complete travel by 1200:

National Rail Enquiries said:
If you break your journey and are still travelling at 0230 then you may stay on the train to complete that part of the journey, but no further break of journey is allowed and all travel must be completed by 1200.

And those rules may also be different from ticket to ticket, depending on the restriction code. So much for simplified ticketing.

No, it is always resume by 1200 on Off Peak (without the day) tickets, I typed completed when I meant to say resume! You can choose to break overnight on the Off Peak but you cannot make that choice with the Off Peak Day. In the highly unlikely event of the last northbound train from Derby going to Chesterfield and not on to Sheffield, then you could take that and break overnight and resume the next morning on an Off Peak Day. But, in reality, if you wanted to break overnight you'd need the Off Peak. But splitting the journey into two tickets would be far cheaper! So in this case the Off Peak is really pointless!
