Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so apologies in advance if I'm asking something that frequently comes up and has been answered countless times

Is anyone aware of an app I could use on my phone offline, that shows every uk train station and it's connections? it would be extremely helpful, for when you are in an area that you are unfamiliar with

I know there is Google maps, but it gets difficult to see what's what and where it's all going

The Interrail Rail Planner app could be useful as it has the entire British timetable (as well as that of most other European countries) downloaded for you to use offline. It has arrival/departure boards as well as journey planning functionality.

The main limitation is that it is only updated around once a month, so any alterations to the base timetable (e.g. temporary timetables or engineering works) are unlikely to be reflected in what it shows. Also it doesn't have any live running information for when you do have internet connectivity.

You could also download a PDF map of train services. @Alex1994 created this map - although note that this is based on the December 2019 timetable, and so some areas now have worse (or, in a handful of cases, better) frequencies/services than this.

Given the current levels of cancellations and service alterations I'm not sure an offline app will be of much use.

How is using an offline map relevant to the need of checking timetables?

A map is a map and can be used without consulting a timetable. I find it very helpful to always have an offline copy of the London rail map and South East rail map in my phone such that I can easily find out where the train shown on the departure board goes.

I was following up on @Watershed’s suggestion regarding an app containing the “entire British timetable”. That wouldn’t be a map.

I think an app containing an entire British timetable of the half-yearly long term planning data is still useful.

I will investigate the possibility of offering a version of my train timetable website which can work offline as a web app. This is useful when I need to check when the next National Rail train is to see if I should jump off the Underground and switch to National Rail immediately as there is no mobile reception underground.

The data will need to be updated every week from National Rail open data service for the app to work.
