Looks like something people might have expected to see pre-WW2, maybe even pre-WW1. If it is of railway origin, what stations are 124 miles from Harrogate ? Without searching through all my charts to check mileages, it might be somewhere like Peterborough.

Is it definitely a railway sign?

The unusual typefaces suggest a roadside advertising type sign rather than a railway sign, but that's just a gut reaction rather than anything scientific or knowledgeable...

I also doubt it's definitely a railway sign, just doesn't look like anything I've ever seen.

With a quick measure on google maps 124 miles would indicate Peterborough as a possible location for the sign, if not railway then where would it be positioned. Can't imagine it on a roadside.

It looks like one of the enamel signs that were on railway stations. I don't know who put them there around 100 years ago, but some survive today and here's one at Oakworth station, on the Worth Valley preserved line.

Many of the old signs were sponsored adverts for commercial products. Virol was some kind of drink, I think. Probably more common when most long distance travel had to be by rail, and before roadside hoardings were in widespread use.

Signs similar to the one in question used to be on walls and fences at well known stop-overs like pubs and hotels.

Perhaps it could have been at an Inn or other stopping point adjacent to the Great north Road (now known widely as the A1), from my knowledge of the area The Cuckoo Pub could be a candidate. Both towns being close to it's current route this would seem sensible.
That being said I'm not entirely sure of the Great North Road's route around the period of this sign.
