Hi.

Just wondering if anyone can give me some insight. A while back my application for a train driver was withdrawn due to stage 2 requiring a proof of address that the email stated HAD to be two utility bills.

Now, I was living with my friend and simply wasn’t on any of the bills so it ended up being the way it ended up being.

I’ve ended up moving back home with my parents. I’m now going through another application and I’m paranoid it’ll happen again. I’m not on any utility bills. All I have is my bank statement. I’ve tried adding myself to the utility bills but my parents have a joined account and it’s very difficult.

My question is, has anyone ever experienced this?
I’ve spoken to a few people and none of them have been asked for proof of address for OPC stage 2, but it might happen since it happened to me.

Does anyone know what the process is assuming I get the job? Will a TOC accept for example my provisional license and a bank statement?
And do I do about OPC?
This is really frustrating as I live within 5 minutes of the depot I’ve applied for.

Any advice will be kindly appreciated.

Id assume the utility bill isnt just for your name on the bill but more the actual address, because utility bills are only sent to that specific address so getting hold of one where you don't live would be difficult unless the person living there gave it to you.

If you're with your parents and it's the same last name you could just state that you're currently living with your parents.

Usually it's utility bills or bank statements as they both have the address on it so I've never had it where it's specifically utility.

Which is why so many parents get their offspring a provisional driving licence as soon as they're 17.

As far as I'm aware you need 2 forms of ID for OPC, 1 photographic and 1 proof of address.
Having sat testing for driver twice and Conductor twice, that's all that's ever been required. So DL/Passport and then any bill with your name and address on.

This is why companies can be fussy over proof of address. There have been many times when they’ve been burned by people who were living somewhere that was conveniently in the acceptable distance from the depot but then moved back “home” as soon as they’d signed a contract.

It’s like saying the dog ate your homework in that I’m sure that it has genuinely happened to people who had done their homework but it’s been used as an excuse by so many others that it got ruined for everybody. Yes, it sucks for those who are genuine but why would a TOC take a risk on such a candidate when there are a hundred applicants for every vacancy?

That the thing, I obviously have a photographic ID but when it comes to bills none of them have my name on it. All I have is a bank statement which normally isn’t actually acceptable apparently.

OPC accepted my wage slip the first time, 2nd time I took council tax as it had both mine and partner's names on

Bank statement is fine. Utility bill is just an old fashioned way of saying proof of address, which a bank statement is.

While I agree with you.

But why do they have to pay for an ID which they will never use. Passport is about £75 ish! And driving licence is maybe 25sh?
They will use it... for Identification at the very least which will be very useful in numerous places even if the main purpose isn't of use. For the sake of £25 or £75 it could cost you a job opportunity.

It will be a very good investment for a whole range of other administrative & life tasks, not to mention you now need it to vote (something I disagree with but not for this topic!).

Ultimately TOCs, as with all employers these days, have to be whiter than white in this area due to the consequences of employing someone who turns out not to have the right to work in the UK.

Needing it to apply for TOC roles would seem like a pretty obvious reason to pay for it! The reality is that TOCs get enough applicants to simply move on to the next person if anyone doesn’t meet the criteria they set in full.

But some TOCs don't even required you to be able to drive a car.

No worries. Points noted.

That’s me an absolute nightmare when opening building society accounts even at the same branch where you already hold accounts!! I have an old original green paper driving licence as well. It’s time the DSA and others stopped this photo if nonsense as it’s not a LEGAL requirement to hold photo id in this country

We had this problem with my now deceased mother.

She was 86 and had severe dementia at the time.

We were required to provide a recognised photo ID for her in order to process some paperwork for her.

Office erk is adamant we need a photo ID.

Driving licence? Nope, never driven. OK,

Passport? Nope never been abroad.

Hmm, Oh hang on says erk, shotgun license? Several pairs of eyebrows hit the ceiling. Really! She's banned from the gas stove after two near fires, doesn't know what ways up and you expect her to be toting a shotgun?

We got her a passport.
