While emailing tfl to resolve a charging issue (all ended well) it was mentioned in an email that for the journey I wanted to make at the "avoiding zone 1" price I had to tap the pink reader at both West Brompton and Clapham Junction (as an aside, I travelled via Wimbledon, which would not normally be viable in the allotted time except at specific times during the peak). Now the tfl website states West Brompton only, but I didn't bother raising this discrepancy as I didn't want to distract from the issue, but I am now given to wonder if there are any journeys for which multiple taps on pink readers are actually required?

Yes there are a few cases. What was the journey you were making?

I was travelling from Earls Court to Norbury. I like to avoid Clapham Junction during the busier times and I achieve this by taking the District Line to Wimbledon and then Thameslink to Streatham. On previous occasions I would alight at Streatham as onward connections can involve a fairly long wait.

On this particular occasion I took advantage of the extra Southern-branded service between Wimbledon and Streatham and got a good onward connection, unaware that travelling a couple of extra stops (in the same zone) would more than double my fare. As I mentioned, I got a refund "on this occasion", along with the advice of tapping the pink reader at both West Brompton and Clapham Junction.

Looking back, I understand why my selected route is not officially recognised as avoiding zone one as you have to time it reasonably carefully in order to avoid breaching the maximum journey time, but time it just right and it's a good way of avoiding very busy National Rail services both at West Brompton and Clapham Junction.
