Paddington Bakerloo line question

Why oh why oh why, at the bottom of the escalator, is there a sign stating:

Bakerloo Line
Southbound -->
Northbound only
(the last part has been partly scratched out but is still immediately legible)
Trivial I know but it bugs me every time!

Presumably left over from engineering works where all trains were running Harrow - Paddington with no service on the central part of the line :)

Edit: If you look at the map below, due to the track layout trains would run into the Southbound platform then head north out of it to head back out of London using the crossover to the north of the station :)

During the works, would they have covered up the word "Southbound" with a sticker saying something like "Platform [x]", or perhaps just "Trains ->" (although the latter often refers to NR, perhaps even without the double arrows)?
