Hi all. I'm trying to make sense of the validity of a Super Off Peak Return ticket, travelling from London Paddington to Truro.

The outward date would be Monday 19/9, on the 12:04 service, which appears to be the first super off peak service. So far so good. The return would either be on Friday 23/9, or Saturday 24/9. The part I'm struggling with is figuring out which services the return leg would be valid on. If I punch in the journey details into GWR's website, it doesn't show me a list of services for the return, which of course makes perfect sense as it's an open return and their website of course doesn't ask to specify a date.

However, if I put it into, say, LNER's website (which I've used frequently in the past due to ease of use), it does ask me the date, and once I've selected a Super Off Peak Return as the desired ticket, I can either specify the Friday or Saturday. However it seems to let me select any service at all, including on the Friday 7-9am trains, which I have to assume it's not actually valid on. Perhaps however on Saturday, being a weekend, any service is considered Super Off Peak? Any guidance appreciated. Maybe inverting my search and pretending it starts on the outgoing day will make figuring out which services are valid easier.

Thanks so much!

Restriction YX? (https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket_types/restrictions/YX)
Restriction Code: YX

Restricted Days: Mondays to Fridays
Not valid on trains timed to depart:

  • London St Pancras after 02:29 and before 10:26 and after 15:15 and before 18:59
Not valid for travel on trains timed to depart earlier than shown from the following stations:

  • 06:40 from Penzance
  • 06:50 from St Erth
  • 06:50 from Hayle
  • 07:00 from Camborne
  • 07:10 from Redruth
  • 07:20 from Truro
  • 07:40 from St Austell
  • 07:45 from Par

  • 08:10 from Liskeard
  • 08:15 from Menheniot
  • 10:30 from Didcot
  • 08:35 from Fareham
  • 10:30 from Newbury
  • 08:50 from Salisbury
  • 09:50 from Southampton
Not valid on trains timed to arrive at London Waterloo before 11:48.

Not valid on trains timed to arrive at London St Pancras before 11:29.

So Monday-Friday you can get 1A78 07:49 Truro-Paddington 12:29 or later, or 2U12 07:20 Truro-Cardiff and change off that train en route. However it's unlikely that 2U12 will result in an earlier arrival into London.

Saturday you can catch 2U10 06:20 Truro-Cardiff or 1A76 06:48 Truro-Paddington 11:29.

That’s so helpful, thanks! I should have said that the intended return travel time will be in the afternoon, so on Friday if I’ve understood correctly, any departure from Truro post 7:20am is valid? And any service at all on Saturday or Sunday?

Yes, time restrictions only M-F and only not earlier that 07:20 from Truro, so you understand correctly.
Assuming it's the fare with the YX restriction code as below (but you said Super Off Peak so it should be):

This is a 'regulated' fare, which means that it must have certain validity, namely it must be valid from 10:30am (at the latest) and cannot have any restrictions on weekends or Bank Holidays.

The first direct service to Truro on which it's valid is the 12:04 as you say, but you can also catch the 11:04 and change at Plymouth if you prefer, to get there an hour earlier.

On the way back, if you travel on the Friday you can take any train from 07:20 onwards, so your first option is the 07:49 train direct to Paddington. And on the weekend you can take any train you like.

Selecting a specific return date will probably help you here, as the journey planner will only offer you the Super Off-Peak fare on trains where it's valid. But you can of course buy it as an 'open return'.

There is an easement allowing travel at 1002 from Paddington. The 1002 is now retimed to 1004, does that easement readjust to the new timetable?

No wonder the 1204 has suffered such overcrowding in the summer, the 1004 for Liskeard and beyond it really should be valid (Except Fridays in July & August ?) Going back quite a while (BR ??) 1004 was limited stops before the fad of clockface timetables above all else became the norm.so probably fairly busy now anyway ?

Perhaps 1104 should run into Cornwall in high summer ? People with luggage dislike changing trains.

Isn't the 1002 the EL at that time service?
May be intentional to bar the 1004 anyway.
