I had the misfortune to lose my debit card to a fraudster today up in London - long story, damned clever fraud, too long for here. As a result I have had my card blocked and a new one and pin is on the way.
Minutes before all this happened I used it on the tube, a single zone 1 fare. Presumably this will now bounce when TFL put it through tonight. What happens then, do they send the bailiffs round for the £2.40 or maybe a polite email. Card is registered at TFL, journey not appeared yet, but they know my details. £2.40 is peanuts compared with what the thieves took.

This must happen quite often, anybody with information?

There shouldn't be a problem. Make sure that your bank know that that transaction is valid and it should still be paid.

If it's not possible to sort it with the bank, then a polite e-mail is likely.

Slightly different issue, but I had overlooked that I had changed bank card some time during the lockdown, and hadn't been to London for some time. This meant than an auto top-up on my oyster card failed (as it's linked to bank card rather than account number) and I got an e-mail that was reasonably polite asking me to sort it out.

They are polite, but not very patient. You are advised to rectify the issue immediately because if you don't they'll cancel the Oyster card.

For future ref, if you register your card on the Oyster site, you can keep an eye on your payments - in that case if the payment hadn't gone through, you're able to make the payment using a different card.

Also vaguely related: I had an absolute mare going down to Merstham a couple of Saturdays ago when I somehow managed to touch in and out with different cards in both directions. I filled in the missing journeys on my debit card (another good reason to register your contactless) and then fired off an email explaining (and apologising for) my predicament re the incomplete journeys on my credit card - they very graciously accepted my grovelling and quickly refunded me.

I have my card registered on the Oyster site and when I get the replacement that will also be there. Thanks for confirming you can sort out debts by paying on a different card on there.
Having lost my debit card I had to use my credit card to get back to Waterloo. That is not registered there but did the job. Out of habit I tend to use the debit card for day to day stuff and the credit card for online things but occasionally the wrong one slips out.

If you have the time i am sure many would be interested if only as a warning to others.

Currently showing as gone through OK at TFL.
See what happens... in the meantime here's a snippet from the T&C's.
3.3 If your card is declined when we submit it for payment, you authorise us to
seek to take payment using your card details again on a number of additional
occasions until we receive the full payment. We will not seek payment on more than
three occasions nor more than once a day nor for longer than 30 days after your
payment was declined.

3.4 If your card is declined when we submit it for payment, we will also attempt to
collect any unpaid fares the next time you touch your card on a yellow card reader or
a portable card reader held by staff. Alternatively, you can sign in to your TfL online
account to pay any unpaid fares, or call TfL Customer Services.

I’ve had similar, I had made a bus journey before I received a text messsge asking me to contact my banks fraud centre as there was suspicious activity on my account. Having established the text was genuine I phoned them and a discussion established that my card had been compromised ( to this day, no idea how). The bank cancelled it and sent me a new one (this happened on a Saturday so I didn’t receive the new card until Wednesday), in the meantime TFL managed to collect the bus fare without any intervention on my part.

I lost my back card after missing a bus journey a couple of years ago.

I cancelled my card and used another for two further bus journeys.

All the journeys were charged, with my only disadvantage being that my payments didn't cap as I'd used 2 cards (costing me an extra 5 or 10p).
