Payment card no longer required for ToD ticket collection at GTR stations?

I collected tickets today at a GTR [Southern] ticket machine and didn't need to insert a payment card before entering the collection reference.
Another traveller using a machine in another part of the station remarked on this too.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Hopefully it's an improvement rather than a temporary "error".
