This is quite a shock (and as a quite proud yorkshireman of local engineering around my area) seeing this on the Doncaster free press 8 August via Google news feed that peglers doncaster suppliers and manufactures of plumbing accessories at Belmont works Balby will close resulting in the loss of over a 1000 jobs at the site according to the news source this is due to foreign competition off other firms I guess however no final decision as been made yet by the firm with workers it doesn't look good and comes as a shock to the company.

You obviously haven’t seen some of the screeds that appear in the Disputes and Prosecutions forum. They usually start with ‘so ‘ and frequently lack punctuation…and some are from those currently supping at the tree of knowledge in our universities.

Doncaster used to be a hive of manufacturing industry. I lived in Balby for eighteen years about two hundred yards from Peglers. In the same area were Mining Supplies, British Ropes and Case tractors. On the other side of town was ICI, and there was of course The Plant, which is now Wabtec. I think British Ropes is still going as Bridon.

Of course, we now have one of the largest warehouses in Britain: Amazon at I-Port. Until the robots take over…

Was this company related to Alan Pegler of Flying Scotsman fame?

It appears so. However, I leave you to work out exactly how by looking at the Northern Rubber Company of Retford, Alan Pegler and Alfred Pegler’s entries on Wikipedia and Graces Guide as I haven’t got the time to disentangle it all.

I see what you mean! Basically, his uncle, Francis, set up the Doncaster operation and Alan Pegler was not involved with it.
