As I've mentioned before, I'm planning a trip to Scotland later, provisionally mid to late May. Given the engineering works at Carstairs, hypothetical planning to get an idea of time is a "nightmare "..unless you want a scenic tour en-route.... and fares seem contradictory.

However, assuming the works stay on target, things should be back to normal for my journey.

Which leads to seat planning. I am in a position where I can either go from Stafford, or Crewe, and return to either. If I was travelling imminently I could get the 11.47 from STA to GLC..perfect !....but my question is, how would I know which seat plan to look at and book for when I understand both types operate to Scotland ?

That, and is the upgrade to Standard Premium worth paying for ?..what the promotional blurb and photo's say and show is one thing, reality can be somewhat different irrespective of the product or service being offered.

Standard Premium is basically first class without any freebies included.

RTT is normally quite good at saying which service is booked voyager and which is booked Pendo on Avanti as voyagers are slower than Pendos due to less tilt ability.

When you know when you want to travel, if you can book Standard Premium on a train then it's a Pendolino (just try, don't go through with the booking if you don't want it, just see if it's available). If you can't, it's likely to be a Voyager (or it's sold out on a Pendolino, less likely). There's also a seat map on the Avanti booking site and others. Realtime Trains is also a good indicator because the timings are different. Also remember that there's a new timetable in May. Late May currently shows 9S55 11:47 to Glasgow as a Pendolino (https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:L34445/2023-05-23/detailed).
Only you can decide whether or not Standard Premium is worth the extra. All it is is a first class coach without the onboard service.

As always, my thanks for the advice in response to my query. I'm not worried about the freebies, but, the extra leg room is enticing.

I do have a Railcard, which always helps, and I know the seat I would prefer hence the link above should allow me to book appropriately

If you're travelling after the Carstairs work has been completed and it's the normal timetable operating, you're almost guaranteed a Pendolino.

The only Super Voyagers scheduled in the current timetable on weekdays North of Preston leave Crewe 16:09 ish towards Glasgow.

Again, my thanks for the above information along with previous replies. I wll certainly be travelling after the Carstairs project is scheduled to be completed so when I book, I will look at the Pendolino seat plan which I assume hasn't changed since Virgin operated the type because I know exactly which seat I wish to book
