Planned Train Replaced by a Slower One - But it was an IET?

1B07 the 8.48 from Paddington to Pembroke Dock was cancelled between Swansea and Pembroke Dock (Sat 24 May 2025) due to “planned train being replaced by a slower one” according to RTT. However, this train from London was an IET and I see nothing going west to south Pembrokeshire as an alternative from Swansea relatively soon after the IET arrived. So what is the truth about why this train was cancelled leaving passengers stranded - I presume - or trying to make their way west on 2 car TFW trains?

GWR journey check is showing it cancelled due to lack of train crew, to take the 11:49 to Carmarthen where a replacement bus will run. Indeed on a Saturday there's extra services that only call at Carmarthen and Whitland to tenby which should help too.

The 11.49 is a late running TFW service from Manchester to Milford Haven and is only 2 coaches and presumably petty full with its own passengers?

Looking at the GWR Journey Check, I see quite a few cancellations or trains not going the full run due to ‘crew shortages’. This wouldn’t have anything to do with this being a Bank holiday by any chanch?

A timely reminder that the cancellation reasons showing on RealTimeTrains aren’t always accurate. Whilst accessible, JourneyCheck is often a more reliable source for the headline reason for cancellation.

Many thanks for that.

Could it have been a train/engine fault since it was losing time between Cardiff and Swansea? According to this MS means “Planned underpowered or shortformed service and or vehicle, incl. exam set swaps”

And for whatever reason, RTT also uses their own definitions for the delay codes. In this case, the description for the code MS is actually "Planned underpowered or shortformed service and or vehicle, incl. exam set swaps".

800018 appears to have been detached and joined 1L20.

800036 went onto the IEP depot and isn't planned to be back out again today, so I suspect the real reason was the unit was needed on depot and the booked driver was the only one available to take it on, hence the cancellation.

The delay has been attributed to:
YDLost path - following another later running train

Looking at the where time was lost = between Cardiff & Bridgend, it does indeed look like the GWR express got delayed by being stuck behind a slower moving freight 6H25 - which came off the mainline at Margam.

Seeing as the Express was likely to catch up and be delayed by this freight train, one might ask why signallers did not send the freight into the loop at Miskin so that the express could overtake and not be delayed?

This was the situation at Llanharan where it is obvious that the express is now stuck behind the freight:> https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/detailed/gb-nr:LLR/2025-05-24/1051

Could the late arrival into Swansea have caused the cancellation of the only direct train of the week from London to south Pembrokeshire?
