BBC News is reporting that the small boat service that runs between Portsmouth and Gosport overnight on Friday/Saturday and Saturday/Sunday will cease operations this weekend.

The service is run by a third party after the main service finishes at midnight, and allows for late night stragglers to get back to Gosport. I think it’s been running for many years, so I wonder what’s happened to cause such a sudden decision?

A late-night ferry linking Portsmouth and Gosport is to stop operating.

The boat for foot passengers had run on Saturdays and Sundays, through the early hours, after the main Gosport Ferry stopped its service at midnight.

Gosport Ferry Ltd said it had been advised by D & P Boat Hire, which runs the late-night ferry, that its crossings would stop immediately.

It added there would be no late night services after midnight going forward from Friday, 14 February.

Curiously the after hours service appeared to be cheaper than the normal ferry.

I think it was if you were just doing a single trip, but the day ferry sells a return trip as minimum, whether you like or not; they also do a lot of seasons and multi-trips. Fifty years ago they did sell returns, but then they moved to only selling tickets for the Gosport to Portsmouth direction and letting you travel for free in the opposite one. Very much appreciated by my parsimonious mother: on Friday she would go down by train to Portsmouth and across to Gosport (free!) to ready the boat for the weekend’s sailing and my father would follow by car after work: they would return by car on Sunday. So she never paid for the ferry.

:D

In my most recent experince the crew now clip tickets on your outbound crossing and then retain them when you travel back - paperwork required in both directions, no free rides!

Indeed, annoying they haven’t yet returned to two ferry working.

Ocasionally they can be seen out on the Solent running day trips
